Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
I reckon - 10 was about right ... remember you'll lose a degree or so for every 100m (we were somewhere around 400). I'd also imagine our location would put us in a prime position for a temp inversion. The same week the temp dropped as low as -16 and daytime temps didn't rise above -6 for over a week.
Fantasticmrmatt wouldn't have noticed just how cold it was due to the northern overcoat he had on

.....and summer sleeping bag looking at those temperatures
Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
I reckon I'll wait till the 13th before looking at the forecast and deciding what to pack!
Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
FF - How reliable is that norwegian website? Its now looking like its going to turn again and be cold. Mach is also close to sea level and the bivi spots are 3-500m so its going to be a cold one. 0 to -1 at night and around 5 in the daytime but with sun? surely not! Sun?
I was hoping to use my 2 season bag, but its now looking like the down monster is coming out!
Met office haven't got that for with their forecast yet, but Thursday night will be zero degrees C. Should have a better picture in a day or 2.

Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
That's a very thorough list Anthony but I believe you've missed a tin of 'Acme Bivvy Gimp Repellant' ... remember people he could be anywhere and no one's safe
May the bridges you burn light your way
Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
very thorough indeed! Even got earplugs, why would you ever need them? :)
Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
Photon1 in wind = Noise :D Ear-plugs weigh 1g per pair.
Fortunately though Gimps cant get into tents, it's the zips that flummax them.

Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
ear plugs think of the extra weight!!!
Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
Following on from Ants list, here is mine. Everything I own seems to be a little heavier and the drops mean I cant get much over the bars. I also cant get my winter bag under the seat so im going with my 2.5 season!
Bars
9L Drybag: Thermarest Trail lite regular, Terra Nova Tarp, Pegs/cord, Rab Storm Bivi.
Memory Map GPS running 1:25k on bars with regular computer
backed up with Garmin Geko and 1:50k paper map in the backpack.
Osprey Talon 22 backpack
Primus Eta Stove, Snowpeak mug Rab Nutrino plus down jacket :? (to compliment my sleeping bag) Mountain Equipment Matrix jacket, Berghaus overtrousers, Rab long sleeve layer. HH Thermal top and bottoms (for sleeping). Sealskinz gloves, Rab lightweight gloves, Rab beanie, buff, money, phone, headtorch, tissues.
Framebag
Spare Batteries, cable ties, multi tool, chain tool, 2 tubes, pump, 1st aid kit, Pico solar battery charger, Leica D-Lux 3 camera, jelly babies, cereal bars :)
Under seat
Mountain Hardware Lamina 35 sleeping bag, thermal liner, 2 rehydration meals.
Dont know what im doing about water yet. Can carry 1.25L in the cages but im going to need more for Sat night. Either purifier (500g) or cart 2L from Mach.

Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
Which way are you headed out of Mach for the night Griff?
Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
South East.
Looking at the 1st (trees) or 2nd (high up, by rocky outcrop) spot in that line of options heading south east.
I have planned for the 2nd, we will see. Water sources look ok up there so I may risk it for a biscuit.

Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
Looks like theres water at Glaspwll and just beyond then it gets a bit more sparse.
Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
Griff dont forget your Spork/Lhoon/Spoon type implement
Kit looks good, it'll be a good test for the new stuff :)
Re. water, it'll start off with 2L in the camelbak and will keep it topped up at any opportunity with the Travel Tap filter (151g) I normally carry.

Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
Thanks Ant. I did think "crap, I forgot to pack my Lhoon!" then I remembered the folding spork in with my stove so not to worry. Dug out a small bottle of iodine and those taste tablet things. Will use a milbank bag to filter. My 1st need filter/purifier is just too heavy to pack for 1 night (500g).Anthony wrote:Griff dont forget your Spork/Lhoon/Spoon type implement

No water on my back, going with bottles but I reckon my backpack weighs in around 3.5-4kg

Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
Water shouldn't be a problem ... with a little common sense nearly all the water you come across will be fine to drink without treating.
Forecast's looking good ... dry and cold. Expect temps down to -5 on the higher ground :D

Haha I am setting up camp near an alleged lad snoring bear so one for me and the other to stuff up hs nose!!!
Re: Kit list ... Mach' N Back.
Things I leant:
Don't rely on electronic GPS (a second map source should be carried as a backup)
If you leave a bit of kit at home you'll end up really needing it
The bridleway from Elan valley to Moel Prysgau Bothy is spectacularly bleak and unridealbe
Taylor's mate snores very loud
Always listen to Ian when it comes to routes in Wales
Moel Prysgau Bothy is very nice and the MBA do good work
Homemade custard based dehydrated desserts don't really work
Somebody somewhere makes Titanium hip flasks
Stuart is retired
iPhones can get surprisingly wet and still work
MemoryMap is expensive but very good
Read the fourth line Pete, it wasn't me despite Dan's pleas/lies.
Unless you mean Si?

Stu the pico holds a charge so is ready to power dump to recharge a phone gps etc in an emergency, really light. I picked one up for £3 the other day :D
Ear plugs are an an emergency "I need sleep device" it also stops me hearing Flatfish laughing at comedy films on his i-Phone :)
Really looking forward to it :D
