Met up with a guy a few weeks ago who told me about this event, having recently driven a van around the south island and seen some of the trails they will be riding I'm really keen to do this next year, plus theres a shorter version earlier in January to make the trip from the UK worth while, anyone else fancy it ?

Looked at it briefly some months ago but thought it was a 2 yearly event and not on again until 2016. May be interested but not 2015 as Mrs B has other ideas for next winter.

That looks absolutely fantastic, I have been fortunate enough to visit the South Island but not
with a bike :?
You guys keep coming up with such great ideas ;)

Its appeared on my list as well, but it may take a bit of time to sort out the logistics.

I was also under the impression they may be extending it further around the south island?

I've seen the Brevet in the past (mostly while researching Freeload racks!), but that could be really tempting for 2016...

So are the Kiwi Brevet and the Great Southern Brevet Race the same ride?

I think they are the same but could be wrong. 2016 has a 3,000km version I believe. Just up your street Paul!

The Great Southern Brevet Race ran at the end of January.

The Kiwi Brevet is running at the moment 1-9th February.

So no, they're not the same event, but I'm struggling to see the difference. I had heard of the Kiwi before as I thought it was an audax-type setup. However, they both seem to involve significant stretches of offroad riding.

Kevin, you're right on the money; my first thought was "is 1100km worth travelling half way round the world for"?!

3000km is much more like it! ;)

Two separate events, the kiwi brevet is in the north of south island, the southern brevet is further south, from what I can see both events essentially cover the south island, will try and get some insider info onto here

Nice writeup

Looks like the 3000km may be set for 2016, although the details are a bit thin on the ground

Enjoyed that write up. Was never sure how mtb-y it was or how much a cx bike would work. Longer distances may be different of course.

It looks like its been everything from roadbikes to pugsleys on the event, and hard core enduro bunnies to folk having their holidays along the route, I'm liking the relaxed attitude to it all, seems typical of the kiwis I met.

Its such a shame that I didnt know about it earlier, would have loved to stay on longer and done this event.

Another blog here: The author, Niel, started the World Cycle Race in 2012 but pulled out in Morocco after his bike went missing for a few days and issues at home. He is riding a Mercian! (and has a second in his shed)
