Even if I had the money or inclination.

I'd not be paying the thick end of a grand for what looks like one of those plastic covers they put on prams.

Stick an engine on it then I'd back it as a shoo-in Robot Wars winner.

Can't quite see what's going on there, but why would you have a cuben outer weighing 100g and a nylon inner weighing 1100g? Can we have a linkypoo please so we can nip over and take the p1ss a bit more? Is it a TN bit of kit?

'Tis a Terra Nova Laser Pulse. It's certainly light at 480g + pegs but it's also very, very expensive at nearly a grand.

Even the guys at Ultralightoutdoor are having to stifle themselves if their "Our verdict" section is anything to go by.

Total weight is 480g (excluding pegs).
The packed weight of 490g includes: flysheet, main pole, end pole, inner tent, pegs, guy lines, tent bag, pole / peg bag. It excludes the owner’s manual pack and fabric repair patches which also come with the tent.

An outer only would be nice - wonder what it weighs minus the inner?

If money was no factor, I'd probably consider it, but it is take the piss expensive.

>50% more expensive than a Lofoton, at approx the same weight; that's obviously the price of an extra 12 cm of headroom.

Do TN still stitch rather than bond their cuben?

That, aside from the obvious, would put me off!

"480g" - indeed. I think I was obscurely taking the pee out of a strange mixture of fabrics and weights and things. As Stu says, I reckon I'd just have the outer. Then again I've already got one of those, it's called a tarp and is a lot more flexible.

I know of two people who used the older (and slightly heavier) version to good effect on the highland trail. One guy paid full wack (around £700 at the time) and the other got it from ebay for half price. My thought was to be careful undressing in it by torchlight as you can see straight through them! (Cue Austin Powers moment)

Its like everything innit - make it lighter and they will pay....

Yep it does. But made out of cuben, it would be for a VERY privileged baby! I expect one was on Harry n Meghan's wedding list (*).

(*) I don't know much about that sort of thing though to be honest. Mrs Perrin's and my nuptials featured some Co-op sandwiches and a second-hand ring. Cost me bloody forty quid that ring did. *And* the Best Man dropped it at the crucial moment (**)

(**) Hardly fair to blame him really, he was my son Tom. Was only two months old at the time so a bit butterfingers.

I think what probably bothers me is the thought of how much money has someone already spend reducing the weight of their kit, for this to seem like a 'good' purchase?

That's within reason (ish) at least.....

Also don't forget that most of the people who buy these have lots of money and no intention of using the kit in anything other mild / benign conditions....

I've seen the 'heavy' version packed up, and I can definitely see its appeal... It's the tiny pack size which is really impressive; maybe even more than the light weight. I couldn't believe how small it packed down to - it made every other tent on the shelf look huge, along with most of the bivy bags. However, although I've not seen the tent erected, I have my doubts about its stability. I came across a YouTube video of someone using an older and heavier version, and on a fairly windy and rainy night in Snowdonia they were unable to pitch it, and were forced to spend the night in their friend's Hilleberg. I suppose that's the trade-off with ultra-lightweight tents like this. If it was up to Scottish weather I'd definitely be tempted by the 'heavy' version, and if I was seriously looking at that, no doubt I'd be wondering if I could stretch to the Cuben version!

Late in on this. £1000 for a wee tent. Nope. And I know the design has its fans but I sold my TN Laser on after a couple of murderous nights on Dartmoor. It wasn't just hard to pitch in the wind, it was the noise the bastard made once I got inside it. Two months later I was up in the Peaks with a tarp in even stronger winds and managed a pretty decent night's sleep. Courses. Horses. N stuff.
I'm just going outside ...

Some time ago, I think it was just after Bearstock, I had a look at ZPacks Hexamid solo tent having seen Ian Fitz's at said event. I thought that was expensive at $400 (plus shipping and duty, etc) it's just 422g but needs pegs and a pole on top of that. Closer to home the Trekkertent Stealth 1 is a mere £180 for 570g, again needs a pole.

I think I'd choose either of the above over the TN offering.

Fair play to TN, it’s lighter than my bivi bag!

Trail magazine tested it recently, think it got 4 or 5 stars for its performance/weight etc etc but only 1 for its price

My hex is 535g with a full bug screen, bathtub groundsheet, ‘proper’ pegs, one of Stu’s poles a deep-drop beak and the bag. I’d back it to stand up to some fairly rough weather too. Although not tested it in particularly bad weather as yet.

Perhaps you could bring it Ian next weekend for a public viewing? Interested to see it.
