Good wheel builder
Hi after my tribulations at the winter bivvy I’m in need of a replacement wheel builder. CRC were going to do a custom build but cancelled the build part of my order and just sent my hubs and rims.
I’m based in Banbury Oxfordshire but work in Newport Pagnell so somewhere local would be good, preferably capable of building a wheel which doesn’t self destruct

Re: Good wheel builder
Phil Corleys in MK? Good shop, good rep but I've no experience of their wheels.
Re: Good wheel builder
Consider sending the bits back if they haven’t delivered what was ordered.
Might work out cheaper to buy a full wheel.
I’ve not paid for build when buying a complete wheel.
Just riding along
Had a set of gravel wheels from him
Can’t fault his service or build
Highly recommended
Leisure Lakes, Cheltenham
Wanted a second pair of wheels
Unfortunately JRA had stopped using DT Swiss
And doesn’t use Mavic rims
So used Leisure Lakes.
Had several pairs of wheels from Leisure lakes over the years
Also highly recommended

Keep pedalling aren't local but my Fargo front wheel has done 20k without a hitch. I'd certainly go there again.
Re: Good wheel builder
They did a lovely job on my new wheel and Shona can even post them to youjohnnystorm wrote:Keep pedalling aren't local but my Fargo front wheel has done 20k without a hitch. I'd certainly go there again.

Can I be the first to suggest buying a copy of Roger Musson's book and doing it yourself?

Well I couldn’t do any worse than a certain Banbury based shop as witnessed at the Christmas jolly.ScotRoutes wrote:I didn't want to be the first but I'll certainly second thatchris n wrote:Can I be the first to suggest buying a copy of Roger Musson's book and doing it yourself?
What equipment would I need?

Re: Good wheel builder
Don't know if the Musson book recommends this but a tool that makes getting the build initially true and round, providing the spoke length is correct is this http://www.justridingalong.com/tools/wh ... ption.html as it winds the nipples to the same number of threads then the little tab on the end disengages the tool. A spoke key will then get the tension you need, I use a spring tension meter to get the final tension and parity between spokes. A jig will help as will a dishing tool but these can be home made for not much money. Lastly some wooden matches to push into the end of the nipples to poke them into the rim hole and engage the spoke thread without loosing them in the rim wall.

I have some kit if you want to give it a go SteveBigdummySteve wrote:Well I couldn’t do any worse than a certain Banbury based shop as witnessed at the Christmas jolly.ScotRoutes wrote:I didn't want to be the first but I'll certainly second thatchris n wrote:Can I be the first to suggest buying a copy of Roger Musson's book and doing it yourself?

Hi Steve,
I live real close to Newport Pagnell, and can lend you what you need.
I could probably give you a few pointers too.

Re: Good wheel builder
You can do it with just a frame/fork and a spoke key, but it's easier with a stand and dishing tool. Have a look at the book and see.BigdummySteve wrote: What equipment would I need?

Cheers for the offer, pickers has loaned me his stand and dishing tool, just ordered the spokes and some tools from SJS.Roobell7 wrote:I have some kit if you want to give it a go SteveBigdummySteve wrote:Well I couldn’t do any worse than a certain Banbury based shop as witnessed at the Christmas jolly.ScotRoutes wrote:I didn't want to be the first but I'll certainly second thatchris n wrote:Can I be the first to suggest buying a copy of Roger Musson's book and doing it yourself?

I have to admit I’m slightly scared but excited about building my own wheels. I had a ride around the block on pickers wheels and I’m still able to type so I’m hoping I can at least produce something similar.
Whatever I do can’t be worse the the poor show broadribb cycles did.

Re: Good wheel builder
If you end up looking for a wheel builder, John Burton from Henry Burtons in Stafford built my 26er wheels - not sure if he's still about as it's been a few years since I was last there. 20,000+ Kms and still straight. The rims have died before the wheels needed truing (wheels still going but the braking surface is shot).
