More tyres - Maxxis Pace?
Has anyone tried Maxxis Pace tyres? I'm looking for something around 2" - 2.3" that's quick rolling but still provides some level of purchase on anything other than tarmac ... trouble is, it needs to be 26" flavoured.
If I had deeper pockets I'd buy a pair of Compass Rat Trap Pass but at over £50 per end I'm loathed to splash out without having at least seen some close up.

Re: More tyres - Maxxis Pace?
And I'm looking for a 650B+ rear for winter.
Re: More tyres - Maxxis Pace?
I used a pace last year on the HT 550 and for relentless 24.
Worked well, used the Exo version. Do they do it in 26??
I've probably (well, almost certainly!) got a stock of 26 tyre in the cellar. Can take a look when I'm home if you want?

Been looking at the ikon myself but I want a 2.4 on rear but quick tyre. I love the trail blazer 2.8 on my 27.5 but want a wider 29er. Just ordered a 3" ranger for the front to try seems fairly light weight for a fatter tyre... Anyone used these :)

Just buy Bontrager, easy!
Re: More tyres - Maxxis Pace?
Can you not get Vittoria AKA tyres in 26"? A known quantity that looks broadly similar.
Re: More tyres - Maxxis Pace?
I have a pair of worn-but-still-usable continental supersonics.
Old but quick.
Lethal on tree routes
May work tubeless. Have latex in them so certainly did at some stage.
Yours if you want them.

Very kind offer Ian, thank you but me and Conti' don't get on when we try and go down the tubeless route.I have a pair of worn-but-still-usable continental supersonics.
Not seen any for a long time but I do recall they were once listed? Can you not get Vittoria AKA tyres in 26"?

Funnily enough I know what you mean about conti for Mtb.
I just looked at the pictures of 26 versions. The tread is very different from the 29 pace I used. They have more tread, look like an ikon-lite rather than the nearly half centre with side knobs that mine look like.

Re: More tyres - Maxxis Pace?
The Bontrager XR series. From XR0 (virtually a slick) up to XR4 (very aggressive) plus the Mud which I haven't tried. I use an XR4 2.35" on the front and an XR3 2.2" on the back for winter swapping to XR2/XR1 in summer. I used the latter on the HT550 and while there isn't a lot of grip in mud and on wet grass for all other situations they are fine. I'd say that the XR2 is roughly equivalent to the Ikon.

Re: More tyres - Maxxis Pace?
I've used the Pace in 650b flavour on my Vaya, they were okay for what you describe, dirt tracks, towpaths etc, felt slightly draggy on tarmac so have gone back to the Horizons
Re Compass tyres, I'm surrounded by converts who are all evangelical about them so I tried a set of Snoquomie Pass 44mm on my Straggler, have to say I was amazed at how well they ride, night and day compared to the Soma Shikoros I had on previously, they are staying on the bike
the only doubt I have about them is sidewall strength, not had any issues yet over all sorts of 'gravelly' terrain but wont be surprised if I tear them at some point

Is that the 'normal' version of the Compass Steve? I really am tempted and your experience might have tipped me over the edge

I have a pair of continental town and country's kicking about in the shed, they do ok off road. Your welcome to them if they're any use.

Re: More tyres - Maxxis Pace?
Compass did roll well, especially on the road, but my tubeless experience with extralight bon jons left a fair bit to be desired. Gave them a fair whack round Macc forest and surrounding bridleways without issue though!
Probably going to take a punt on a set of Rat Traps when I eventaully get back, got a dumb-but-fun bike build on the back of my mind.

Thought this looked kind of interesting.
Knobbles, so shouldn't be (too) lethal off road.
Interlocking knobbles along the centre lines, so shouldn't get over taken by granny.
Same tred as the CX mountain king tyre, just a lot wider.
Puncture protection
Going to order a pair for the Lakeland monster miles gravel ride
