I just bought this, which comes highly recommended pretty much everywhere...

...but be warned, you could buy a new bike for the price (just not a very good one)

We've got the CRC own brand ones - they are big enough to get a fat bike in. If it's just for very occasional use then a cardboard box from your LBS can be just as good, we've used them going to Peru and Cyprus, you just need some pipe lagging and bubble-wrap to provide more padding.

CTC poly bag for me. 3mm of padding ain't gonna do much if a baggage handler decides to see whether or not your bike and fly ... which they'll hopefully be less inclined to do if they can see it's a bike.

I stalked the internet for ages, and earlier this year I managed to get an Evoc bike bag for £210 from Tredz.
For that price I was pretty happy with what I got, it's easy to move around packed, and is as protective as you can hope for without spending megabucks. Fits in the boot of my hatchback too.
It'll take a 29er MTB with a little bit of disassembly.
Watch your weight limit. Some of the cases I looked at would get you close to the limit without a bike in it !

My local bike shop hires them £4 day . Probably worth checking with your local place?
