What's the go-to quilt then..
I'm sure it's been done to death, so apologies, but wifey asking me for birthday ideas, so kinda thinking of getting a quilt.
Just want something for the warmer months, this stupid disease I have means I have poor show circulation now, so feet run cold, but rest stays warm..
So, what do I need to have bought?
Cheers..

IMO you'll not go wrong with a Cumulus - either a 150 or 250. I use a 150 for summer and it's generally warm enough but a 250 will probably be a little more useful for an additional 20 euro and not much heavier / bulkier.
Good service and generally well priced here: https://www.outdoorline.sk/en/39-quilts

I'd say for summer months the cumulus 150 would be really hard to beat.
The pad attachment isn't as good as the enlightened quilts but the extra cost of EE means the cumulus scrapes through for me.
The Slovakian site Stu links to is where I got mine from, quick delivery too.

1+ for Cumulus. Cant go wrong with them or the supplier Norm recommend.
Top bit of kit!

Re: What's the go-to quilt then..
When I was buying my quilt there seemed to be question mark over the suitability of Cumulus quilts for 6' tall people. I asked the question on here and got replies from people saying I'm 5' 8" and it's great. In the end I went for Enlightened Equipment.

Another happy Cumulus 150 user here. I'm a warm sleeper so it's fine for me but the extra weight of a 250 is all filling. I'm 5' 11" and can cinch the top around my neck so length isn't a problem

Re: What's the go-to quilt then..
I went with Enlightened and while it is a great bit of kit the cost was very high once a hefty bill from DHL pushed another £74 onto the cost.
They took a long time to make it, 7 weeks lead time but it was sent quickly.
Sadly, they made it the wrong size,.
The pad attachment is much less faff than the Cumulus system.
For my next purchase I will be going with the Cumulus.

I think talk of the pad attachment system can be a red herring at times - I never attach a quilt to a mat, I simply use it as a quilt

Re: What's the go-to quilt then..
Cumulus great. I literally got mine 2 days before Brexit so not sure if price gone up since. The lace around the back of the mat is a bit tricky to figure out, but once you suss it, it's very clever.

UK Hammocks made in Surrey/Hampshire. They are very light and very warm. Great value for money.

Cumulus 250 (too much of a wuss for a 150) and a 450 for winter, then the 450 over the 250 for below freezing.
Down jacket as well when needed.

Two quilts AND a down jacket.
I can't say that anything on this thread has me interested in buying a quilt. However, I'm hoping that Andy gets his Cumulus deal done soon and will let me borrow one

Re: What's the go-to quilt then..
I've got the cumulus down comforter as I wanted something adaptable I could use as either a traditonal over blanket in summer months or with a footbox when required. Its nice but I just wish they'd made it tapered - Its a little bit narrow at the top end for me which compromises it in colder conditions.
Re: What's the go-to quilt then..
Just been looking at cumulus quilts and noticed they are only 77cm wide at the top ? ... doesnt seem a lot for a wider person to get some good wrap under , or am i mistaken ?
comparing sizes to the likes of alpkit quilt that is 130 cm across the top ,
Enlightened quilts are 137 cm wide
anyone able to measure a cumulus for me please just to confirm please

Re: What's the go-to quilt then..
Just measured my Cumulus 150, it's 154cm wide at the shoulder end. I suspect Cumulus specify the "width" whereas Alpkit and Enlightened specify the "girth".
As I mentioned in the bivy thread, girth is double the width.

Thanks for doing this, was hoping it was that ... looks like a quilt is on my birthday list as well as a new mat :)whitestone wrote:Just measured my Cumulus 150, it's 154cm wide at the shoulder end. I suspect Cumulus specify the "width" whereas Alpkit and Enlightened specify the "girth".

Re: What's the go-to quilt then..
I've got a 250, and it's very nicely made.
I'm 6' and wouldn't mind if it was 2" longer, though it doesn't stop me using it and it still keeps me warm.
Apparently you can ask them to lengthen it slightly when they make it, which I should have done.
The way to use the elastic lines for attaching it to a mat aren't very obvious. Basically the quilt is sized so that it'll go round you, but not the mat. Until I understood that I thought they were too small.
You feed the mat through a couple of loops in the elastic, then slide under the quilt. The elastic holds the edges of the quilt snug to the top surface of the mat, by gently pulling those edges under your body. This means you need to lie on a couple of pieces of elastic. This description sounds like I tighten the elastic so it's under tension, but I don't, it doesn't need it.
Or you can do it Stu's way, which on a warmish night sounds simpler.

I've a horrible feeling I have a) bought the wrong bivi bag, or b) won't be able to use a quilt..
I bought one of the Ti Goat Kestrals and it's too small to use with the pad inside.
Mind, it might just work with a quilt?

Re: What's the go-to quilt then..
Depends on how thick the pad is and how big you are. I'm 42" chest and am fine with bag or quilt with a Klymit x-frame mat inside a normal sized bivy bag but if I use the Exped Winterlite mat or use both bag and quilt then I need something like an Alpkit Hunka XL.Teetosugars wrote:I've a horrible feeling I have a) bought the wrong bivi bag, or b) won't be able to use a quilt..

I use that very same set-up (mat outside) ... however, I'm double dead hard and don't ever bother fastening the quilt to the mat. I'm still here and generally sleep wellI've a horrible feeling I have a) bought the wrong bivi bag, or b) won't be able to use a quilt..
