Nowhere near as big as a Hunka XL ... you'll not fit a air mat in one.
I was about to say the same thing. Kestrel is sized more like a regular Hunka so doesn't sound like it'll meet your needs.

I think I'll just hang out for a hunka xl they're due in in March so I can wait until then. Pity you don't seem to be able to pre order.

Thanks :-bd

If you want to go down the ultralight, yet not actually waterproof route, I'd look towards Borah. I really rate the Kestral but the Borah bags are much larger and also very well made, etc.

Borah would probably suit my needs really. Yes want much lighter than my current one which is nearly 1kg, but doesn't need to be stand alone in the pouring rain standard

Have a look on their website http://www.titaniumgoat.com/index.html

Oh and they currently have a sale on. Shipping took 4-6 days.
Looks excellent ! With a zip and bug net it'd alleviate most of my bivi worries.
"Size: 76" chest girth, 48" foot girth, 87" length.

(193cm chest girth, 122cm foot girth, 221 length)
vs Hunka XL
"Tapered shape: 235 cm long x 98 cm wide at the shoulders/72 cm at the feet "

So XL is longer (I'm 5'10" ) ...
I'll have a think.

I've both a Borah Cuben Bivy (standard size) and a Hunka XL. I got the Borah off IanFitz when he was selling it on here, not used it in anger yet. In comparison:

The Borah is bigger, not by much, maybe a couple of cm in width.
The Borah is much lighter. Actually it's 125g compared to the HXL's 500g
The Hunka is more robust. Given the difference in weight this shouldn't be a surprise.
The Borah is midge proof and you can completely zip it up.
The Hunka is cheaper.

Neither are completely waterproof as the Borah has the noseeum panel and the HXL enclosure is a drawstring so there's always some form of hole but the HXL is closer to being waterproof as you could use it "upside down" and have the hood upperside. I'd be prepared to use the Hunka standalone but unless there was no rain forecast I'd use the Borah with a tarp.

For those times I want to be really lightweight then I'll take the Borah but for general use I'd go with the Hunka due to the better robustness.

It's the lack of zip that puts me off the Hunka XL ... at my age I need a piss in the night... I'd hate having to climb out the bag rather than just unzipping it :/

You can get a side zip for the Borah though mine just has a chest zip.

My spreadsheet says that my Borah Bivy weighs 216g

Normal big size, but it has a L shape zipper and a letter box mesh rather than the full top half. Couple of extra tie outs too

Fits a large Neoair and a big down sleeping bag, plus me at 6'3

Ben, I take it that's the Ultralight side bivy http://borahgear.com/sidebivy.html rather than the cuben fibre one?

How big do you have to be for a regular hunka to be too small? I'm 5"10 (173cm) and fairly thin (65kg). Was planning on getting a regular but is it worth holding out for an xl?

The standard size is fine if you're of average build and don't plan on filling it with a proper winter bag and thick air mat. Use the mat on the outside and it's fine outside of those times when you're using previously mentioned, great big sleeping bag.

It's not you but you plus sleeping bag and sleeping mat. All that volume needs a bigger bivy - I could get all the kit in a normal sized bag but by the time I wriggled inside as well, all the down was compressed and I felt like I'd been wrapped for posting :o

Anyone ever used one of the army surplus gortex bags? They look big (and £30). And everyone knows squaddies won't have done anything horrific in it...

Very similar design to a Hunka and generally (they do vary a little) a touch bigger than a Hunka XL ... main issue tends to be weight, they're not noted for their lightweight properties.
