Is the Spring Thing a thing?

Post by TheBrownDog »

Is there already a thread for this? Reg reminded us in another thread that those of us who joined the SE Chilterns winter bivvy enjoyed each other's company so much, we thought we'd do it all again in Spring.

Is the Spring Thing a thing with a set date, like the winter bivvy? I cant see it on the BB Calendar.

Not on the calendar as I didn't know the Spring Thing was a thing - but you have ever uttered it on here now so I think you should make it happen!

If you need a date putting on the calendar let myself or Zippy know

If anyone further north fancies a spring thing I might be interested in joining in as I hope to be back on two wheels soon

Thanks Wenchy

Right then. I'm a fan of the astrological calendar (rather than the meteorological one) so for me spring starts on 20 March, which is the equinox. So what say we make the Spring Thing

Saturday 25 March*

* this also happens to be the only weekend in March I have off, so I'll be out that night regardless for BAM. Happy to push The Spring Thing back into April.

Good reminder TBD. Have "diarised" that. I'll get my people to fax confirmation to your people as well. Of course next day is "Mothers Day" so I need to be careful of any repercussions there ;-). Woburn Woods was another option last time - maybe a go-er this time? Near railway stations and M1. Now we just need another word to rhyme with "thing" so that we can maximise the alliterations.

R

PS. "equinox" - is that the one where we all have to dance nude round a load of meths stoves at midnight or am I getting confused with something else?

Excellent. We may have an event on our hands. I'll drop a note out to the SE Winter Bivvy Whatsapp group to get it on the radar.

Woburn Woods sounds like an excellent idea, though last time I put tracks through there it was infested with Forestry goons (well, one Forestry goon) taking a little too much pleasure (he had a cheeky smile) in telling people (ok, me) off for riding on "illegal" trails.

Sarah, the Tribes of the North won't need much encouragement to get out in early Spring. Maybe start a new thread to gauge interest and take it from there. If it all takes off, the Scots and the Welsh will inevitably come over the top with nicer scenery, more challenging routes and a superb bothy. Or you could jump a train and join us softies down south. We're quite good company (Reg and Nigel are especially amusing) and you're never more than 5 miles from an excellent eggs Benedict.
Now we just need another word to rhyme with "thing" so that we can maximise the alliterations.
Bling Spring Thing - best single piece of bike porn wins a prize*

Left Wing Spring Thing - best tree stump oration on the evils of populism wins a prize *

Swing Spring Thing (as in the music, ya reprobates) - best rendition of Mack the Knife wins, yes, a prize *

* Prizes may or may not be real.

"Don't you mess with my spring a thing", best Chuck Berry impersonation wins. (Some of you may be too young to understand this).

Can't do late March sorry.. Mid-April is usually the time I get my 1st spring bivi weekender in, a few weeks makes a real difference in how green and warm it can be. If anyone is up for a ride out around then let me know, STv2 - maybe some byways and along the Ridgeway for ~40 miles from Wendover then a bivi on the ridges past Goring. Makes for a good dinner supply spot an hour or so before the bivi and nice breakfast on the way back through on Sunday. Or Woburn is good - can be linked up with Rushmere and some trails through Leighton Buzzard (no, really!) if the train station there is of use.

It might be one weekend too early for me, but don't know for sure yet. The weekend after would be better, but that's just me :)

Having just signed up for the WRT (gulp!), I'd better get some practice trips in! Had hoped to do the pre-Christmas ride, so would be chuffed to join in on this. Are little 1 man tents allowable or is it 'Strictly Come Bivi' ?

I used a small 1 man tent on last year's WRT so that sounds like a good plan to me :-bd

Had a spare moment so knocked up a little route from Leighton station across to Ampthill, 20 miles each way, mostly orf road, pub and pizza (or something) at the end, plenty of woods and ditches around Ampthill (or you could crash out in CentreParks(*) if you like!); but obviously all suggestions valid and welcome! I think I gotta be back around lunchtime for "Ma's Day" or I'm a dead dude. I'm not into all these "Greetings Card Days" but I've been told.

(*) No sorry I'm not going to use the mis-spelling.
