Summer Solstice(ish) Run to the sun.

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

Yes, I realise it's the first week of January but (a) these things can sometimes be like herding cats and (b) I thought it might give people something to look forward to - anyway, here's the rough outline that's banging around in my head.

Meet up somewhere in mid-Wales on the evening of Friday June 23rd.

Set off towards the Pembrokeshire coast with the intention of riding through the night and arriving with the dawn or at least in time for breakfast.

Spend the day splashing about in the sea, eating ice cream and snoozing ont' beach.

Set off for 'home' late afternoon. Spend the night out int' hills and arrive back Sunday afternoon.

Anyone?

On or off road?
Probably a little of both Bob. However, the terrain would likely be suitable for most things above 35c and below 4" :-bd

Badger dodging? I'd like that. I know it's a way off, but do you reckon it's a definite? So much good riding in Europe on the cards for 2017 going back to Banff may have to wait a little longer.

I see no reason why it won't go ahead Scott. In my head, I have visions of clear blue sky and warm balmy evenings but even it it lashes it down all weekend, it shouldn't stop us, 'cos it never has before

Sounds like a cracking idea Stu.

We did a solistice ride last year, keen to repeat it.

Hopefully make it along if I haven't moved to France by then.

Departure is likely to be Rhayader or Llangurig but maybe pick folk up along the way.

Destination will somewhere that sells icecream on the Ceredigion coast line or maybe even Pembrokeshire.

Just so no one thinks I've forgotten about this ... destination sorted, you just need to remember to pack your speedo's and bring ice cream money. Route is a work in progress but promises a little of most things but probably no death-march unless we fancy something very remote for Sat night on the return leg - actually, if the weather plays nice it might be considered as it'd be quite special.

Still undecided as to meet at Llangurig or Rhayader but I'd estimate departure time to be around 8.30 - 9.00pm, which will hopefully give people time to get there after work. Any preference, time revisions or whatever, please speak up.

Although, June 24th is a new moon, we'll hopefully still have plenty of daylight but please do bring lights inc' a half decent rear one. :-bd

As ever - Open door policy and all welcome.

What might a rough mileage look like?

And what time might we get back to rhayader? Very rough timing only

Group ride (in my mind) ... one for all and all for one.

Ooh, 40 miles each way maybe with quite a bit of lane work toward the end. We'll have plenty of time to cover the distance, so pace slow rather than blistering.
And what time might we get back to rhayader?
Given that it'll be light nice and early but allowing for Sun morning faffing, I'd like to think lunchtime(ish) wouldn't be far off the mark.

Thanks Stu. Might be pushing my luck with another 2 night weekend away in relatively short succession, but if I can manage a pass I'll be there. Distance, plans and timings all work quite nicely. Shame about the new moon, a full moon would have been pretty special

Then again it's Wales, it'll probably be raining anyway!
