GR5 next September

Post by Tonto »

My rough plan is to travel by train to Modane, head to Nice over a week or so and then either fly back, or use chemin de fer.
Anyone fancy keeping me company?

Thinking of the first week of September, but quite flexible.
Seems the TGV to Modane does not take bikes, so flying to Geneva may be better.

This year, we rode in from Nice to Turin during the first few days of the month and then back to Nice during the first week...I'll keep an eye on this thread looking for the dates you're running.

Probably around 6-8 thousand feet a day. Twenty ish miles.
Traveling time between 7 to 10 hours a day.
Just to be clear, I will be getting a train from Geneva to Modane.

Flights are booked, Luton to Geneva on Tuesday 10th , Nice to Luton on Wednesday 18th. Will take the train to Modane and start from there.
Solo at the moment, but would welcome some company. If you didn't get a place in the TNR this could be a rocky alternative

Howdy, I'll stick a tentative hand in the air to register my theoretical interest in the idea.

You'll note the lack of firm commitment  . This is because it's more than likely that it'll not happen but it's a route I've been meaning to ride more of and the dates sit nicely with when I usually like to go do something (and I couldn't get my act together in time to go for a TNR entry for this year).

I'll keep an eye on the thread and see what pans out.....

Either way I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Cheers, Gairy.

Thanks Gary, l have read that report before but have struggled to find it recently.
They seemed to move at a rapid pace. Much faster than I am planning. Staying at refuges/hotels probably kept their kit light.

Thanks Chris (did l call you Gary before?)
That video was one of the main reasons for choosing this trip. Although I fully expect it to rain for most of my week,. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best .

Might be up for this as a first foray abroad on a bike.

You would be most welcome.
The planning is going well ( in my head).
Perhaps we should do an overnighter to see if we are matched speedwise. # blinddate :)

Get tha coat, tha's pulled...

From a quick forum search, you're somewhere in the deep south on the wrong side of the M62. ;-) Where's your normal playground?

I do generally have to travel for quality wilderness. Peak district mostly, do the Jennride in the lakes every year. I am not doing WRT as it clashes with work.
I am happy to go north for a mooch about.
