Freeze dried food, what's your go to meals?
We need some light weight pre-packed dehydrated food packs for Iceland in July.
Please let me and SummitToppler know your best meals that you buy and where's the best place to buy them from please?
Cheers
CBA, making my own, unless it's really tasty and really, really easy.

Noodles. 2 packages per meal. Contents of both in a pouch, which is suitable for rehydration and eating out of. 800-950 kcal per meal. 1/3 or 1/4 of my supper meals are based on that.
My GF and I also like many of Expedition Foods stuff.
Mountain House too.
Trek n'Eat not so much although we get that stuff 40 % off...
Fuizion are mostly really tasty and use bigger chunks to bite on. Unfortunately the meat chunks are a bit too big in some cases and don't rehydrate well. Servings are on the small side and for long days out just not enough on longs trips, though they may have upped the sizes like some other brands.

From some brands like Exped Food you can order directly

I hiked and biked across Iceland 3 x and may be able to help out and recommend a few things. Some photos on IG (g.m.liesch).

Almost none of them come with enough protein to be of proper consideration for a decent evening meal for me... but the ones I will likely go back to are:
Be-Well Expedition (Extreme) - Mexican Chilli Con Carne
LYO - Mexican Dish
Mountain House - Chicken Korma Curry
Trek N Eat - Chili Con Carne
Given I've tried upwards of thirty of them... that's not a great ratio. Firepot Orza Pasta would be there too, but it's so ridiculously noisy to carry in a bike bag. It's like a massive pack of half full tic-tacs.
As for where to buy, either direct from https://www.bewellexpeditionfoods.com or https://basecampfood.com

Mama Thai red or green curries, one of each for a meal. Not as calorific as some but very cheap, and tasty too
I've had dozens and still enjoy them

Had some last weekend - agreed that they are pretty good for dehydrated food. A bit bulky so I wouldn't want to carry more than a couple of days' worth.benp1 wrote:Mama Thai red or green curries, one of each for a meal. Not as calorific as some but very cheap, and tasty too

Better weight than wisdom, a traveller cannot carry
Re: Freeze dried food, what's your go to meals?
Literally just had a LYO Penne Bolognese... which was fairly nice TBH. Macros don't really work for me, but yeah, I'd eat it in a pinch.
Am just about to try Be-Well's Extreme Chocolate Chip Dessert...
...and it's rancid. Not even wasting my calories on that.

can you take food into Iceland ?, just a thought...
Re: Freeze dried food, what's your go to meals?
All in all I took food worth of 35 days in two separate trips and never had an issue.SteveM wrote:can you take food into Iceland ?, just a thought...
I fill the meals into my own pouches. This way I've less rubbish, less weight, less volume.
On my own pouches I write what's inside and amount of water for rehydration. Works lovely.
I know, it's a waste of plastic, but I take care in my daily life.
Re: Freeze dried food, what's your go to meals?
For protein in Iceland, try hardfiskur. Smells slightly strong but tastes amazing. Many of my lunch time meals consisted of crackers, mayo and hardfiskur. Yummy!
Re: Freeze dried food, what's your go to meals?
Just tried Be-Well's Extreme Strawberry & Custard.
A bit too sweet for me, but if I needed massive calories in a small package, I'd definitely consider it.

But as it will be freeze dried and in my bike box as long as I don't go over the weight allowed I shoukd be ok with this sort of food I guess
Re: Freeze dried food, what's your go to meals?
Firepot do ~1000 cal servings. I like their bolognese and their chilli. Not so keen on their mushroom risotto.

I must say I am really enjoying the Firepot range of dehydrated (not freeze dried) foods. Less chemicals and no e-numbers, taste great and best of all, eat/taste like real food. Highly recommended.

I had the Firepot Chilli last week. Not as tasty as the Orzo Bolognese they do but still very nice. It didn't really rehydrate too well either but I think know I was being too impatient on account of being hungry. That's the two from their sample pack offer now scoffed and I'll definitely be buying more. Very tempted by the bigger portion options too.

i find that once you add the water - reseal with the strip along the top of the foil packet and shake, shake, shake for a few moments before then leaving to stand. Its much more effective than mixing with a fork etc. The time to re hydrate is not the quickest, but left in my woolly hat, its always been fine (as I use the time to fettle with kit, drink the tea/coffee made with the excess water).ScotRoutes wrote:I had the Firepot Chilli last week. Thanks for your help
Re: Freeze dried food, what's your go to meals?
It is really easy to make your own.
But it depends if you can cook to begin with.

Before every one gets excitied, kitchen dehydrators don't allow to dry food as freeze dryer do.ianfitz wrote:It is really easy to make your own.

There's a limit to what you can dry and albeit this will not cause any issues, you can't preserve vitamins, enzymes (many proteins in fact) and many other goodies you may want in your food in the same way.
Some build freeze dryer them selves with more or less success.
Despite some limits, a kitchen dehydrator seems a good investment for many.
Re: Freeze dried food, what's your go to meals?
Tried the LYO Pork Loin + Green Peppers + Potatoes last night. Delicious.
Would definitely take that with me on one of the rare occasions I carry a stove.

New to this game, but I'm partial to the Blå Band meals. Extreme chicken and vegetable pasta isn't bad either and has a few more calories for similar weight to the BB packages. LYO seem pretty good, but what you save on weight you also lose with calories. You'd need two LYO pork 'n barley to be just over one BB goulash, for example.

It's been mentioned before, but it's generally because a lot of the brands add palm oil to up the energy content. You could just as easily carry a little bit of olive oil / coconut oil to add in.
Reminds me, I've been meaning to try oatmeal + coconut oil + fruits. Reckon it could make for a delicious breakfast.

Yup, LYO don't add palm oil.Richard G wrote:It's been mentioned before, but it's generally because a lot of the brands add palm oil to up the energy content. You could just as easily carry a little bit of olive oil / coconut oil to add in.

Probably partly why they're so tasty
