How many bikes is too many

I've got 6 (jumpy MTB, xc bike, fatty, cx bike, roadie, bmx) and while i could easily have more (a dh bike and/or a trials one) 6 seems to be quite a lot already...

I had to ask myself with question a couple of years ago. It was getting silly. I had nine of the things and only ever rode three of them. So Ive sold off six bikes in the past two years, keeping a rigid 29er for bikepacking, my Fatty and a Whyte 901 for when I want to get rowdy.

The one bike I wish Id kept was my Condor Pista fixie. Not to ride. Just to look at. It was a thing of beauty and I genuinely miss it.

I should really dispense with one of the chubbies but they have been the most recent additions. So no chance of that!

The roadie hasn't seen action for over three years, should really get rid of that.

And the motorbike is definitely on a shoogly peg atm. Expensive extravagance that has been superseded by bikepacking in the main...

In coming around to this idea, one for work and commuting and another bike (in my case, singlespeed commuter and rigid, geared 29er for fun stuff).

Currently don't use my fatbike, winter road bike, spare 26" singlespeed mountain bike and my aero road bike. Also have several frames knocking about too, all pointless.

Shame they don't carry any second hand value that would make the above worth passing on

I'm currently on 8.5 of the little buggers (and use them all).

They are (in ascending order of tyre size):

- Road bike (Planet X Super Pro SL)
- Pub bike (Planet X Kaffenback SS)
- Dave Marsh 80's road frame/forks (ongoing restoration project of love - I lived across the road from Dave's shop growing up but could never afford one of his bikes)
- Gravel frankenbike (Cotic Escapade)
- 26" hardtail (Cotic Soul)
- 29er rigid (On-one Lurcher)
- Bouncy bike (Santa Cruz Blur LT)
- 29+ (Singular Rooster)
- Fatty (Travers Bat Fastard)

I justify them as there's very little overlap in use. I could quite easily do without the Soul but I'd get so little for it that I might as well keep it and arguably I don't need a 29er and 29+ but they're quite different beasts.

I plan on switching the Lurcher for a Solaris as/when a used frame magically appears and at some point in the future I'd like to replace the bouncy bike with one with bigger wheels but that'll only happen when the Blur dies.

Usually I buy used frames and always build up the bikes recycling bits and getting old/used/sale parts so it's not as extravagant as it might first appear - honest!

All get used about the same.

Just built a rigid SS titanium mtb to add to the fleet so 4 now.

Truth be told if I could find a decent 140mm straight steerer fork I'd manage just fine with the Ogre for everything. That ship's well and truly sailed though.

I suspect I might well buy a Vir Fortis at some point...
