Iceland bothies/shelters?

Post by summittoppler »

I'm off out to Iceland with John Climber in the summer for a week of fat biking. Our 'rough' plan is to get out on day rides by using a 4x4 as a mobile base camp.
However, the more I search the web the more I'm seeing these shelters located out in the sticks. My thinking is it'll be great to maybe use one/two during the week.

So a couple of questions for the masses:

Is there a website/map showing the locations of these huts?
and
How will I survive a week with JC?

Cheers
Jeff

Down on the south coast we camped, actually we camped at Landmannalaugar as well which wasn't exactly comfortable  It was fairly quiet in September but if you are going in summer then things will be a lot busier. I think JC's been asking on Facebook as well, Cath might have responded there.

We did a few routes off this site -https://www.wikiloc.com/trails/mountain-biking/iceland

There are huts, emergency shelters and earth huts.

Huts are serviced, have heating, proper kitchen, water, loo etc. and are costly.
Emergency shelters are not serviced, have an outhouse, mostly a water source nearby (not in the case of Kistufell eg.) and same goes for earth huts like the one at Laugarvellir (stupidly great spot with hot pot, some amazing moon-like landscapes and enjoyable double tracks and hard enough surface to go completely cross country w/o leaving tracks just right at the "doorstep"). I never slept in a shelter but came past some and I can't remember any charges. Definately no charges for the earth huts.

Here's another map for Basecamp and GPS (works just fine on Edge 810)

About 6mins in, shows a photo of one of the emergency shelters that are around the coast. Probably no use for cycling though?

Check out the charity he was raising money for. Clowns without frontiers.
