You'll get used to the bar-end shifter in 10 minutes. Much less faff than STI.

Are they the TRP Hylex brakes?

If so, I'd take those + bar end shifters over STI's and mechanical discs any day of the week

Hydro STI's are the obvious way to go, but £££

Which Arkose is that Stuart?

I have a 2015 Arkose 2, 1x10 and hydro discs - it's excellent

Mainly used for commuting but does the odd bit of light offroad or canal. Definitely recommended, but I think/thought it was dropped in that spec

Way outside your stated budget - but I recently got the 2016 Norco Search Ultegra (£2k from Evans) on my works C2W scheme.
Work put in £1k and I coughed up the rest.

I'm loving that bike and the hydro brakes are very good :-bd

Or Evans are doing the 2017 model with 105 hydro brakes for £1400.
That's only any good for you if your work are flexible about the additional payments (and you can afford to drop the extra cash of course !)

I think it's called the X1 Ben ... or something like that.

It's the Arkose X. New version of the Arkose 2 1x10 bike.

Yes, new flat mount versions.

Hmmm, interesting, didn't know that was coming out. It looks very similar to the 2 I have, which is a good thing.

I prefer the colour of mine, but that X looks to have better tyre clearance and wider rims. Tubeless too, I've not tried tubelessing the rims on my Arkose, it's supposed to be OK but seems little points given I'm running Marathon+ tyres

If your little you could get a small 2016 Croix de Fer. Loving mine. 2017 version seems a bit steep though for a new paint colour.
