Recommend me a bum bag

The zip gave out on my OMM bum bag over the weekend. I'm not inclined to replace with the same as I found the waist strap would gradually loosen on long rides, amongst a couple of other niggles. So, I wondered what else others on here might recommend?

I've been using the Ortlieb and it's much as you'd expect - reassuringly expensive

It's been comfy on all-day rides, though I've only had two bottles in it a couple of times. Waterproof, robust - though heavy because of that.

The wee zipped "floating" pocket on the rear is perfect for a SPOT too.

I use the montane batpack. I think it's pretty good.

+1 on the Batpack6. Only issue I find with it is if you leave the zips full of crap for too long they get unhappy, but nothing a good wash and waxing won't fix. A regular TX Direct washing is also useful, but don't expect it to hold water out forever (dry bags/ziplocks inside are a must).

OMM waist pouch 3l and Montane Batpack here. Happy with both

Former is a fair bit smaller than the latter

Latter is my main bag for local rides

For short rides where I just keep money and insulin on me I used a cheap and cheerful 2L karrimor rush, lasted 4 years now of more use than I really should be admitting to given its place on the fashion food chain

For most rides now I use a Camelbak Palos, most comfortable pack I own and u own quite a few *cough* 27 *cough*
Comes with a 1.5l bladder which works better half full but most of the time I use it without the bladder for more room.
Tiny bag but fits A LOT of kit and the belt fits like a well moulded pack belt should. I keep all my tools, jacket, gloves, 1st aid, ect in it ready just to grab and go, worry every penny

I have a Lowe Alpine one of uncertain vintage (it's at least fifteen years old), no idea of the model or whether it's still made. A couple of the prongs on the main buckle have broken so it needs a new one of those but it just keeps going and going. I used to use it a lot for fell running.

That's pretty good value! Does appear to be a dry bag and a strap, but I'm sure it serves the same function

Maybe I'm missing something, but couldn't you make (and sell) your ideal bum bag? It's a zipped bag, with a strap. On separate occasions I have bought both a zipped bag and something with straps from your fine company...

Edit: Failing that, I use an Osprey Talon 4 (the one with the two bottle holders) - although that's more of a lumbar pack than a bum bag.

Thanks for the advice so far, some excellent suggestions.

I don't think making my own would achieve a better result than something off the shelf. Plus I don't have time, and I need something for the Highland Trail.

Bum bag vs lumbar bag. Hmm, interesting distinction. It was looking at wenchies bum bag at the WRT that me thinking - that was an Osprey Talon 4 I think?

In terms of niggles with the OMM;
A bit more Waterproof would be nice.
Two zipped waist pockets
More than one internal compartment
Decent waist belt that doesn't slacken off on you all the time.

Yes Ian it was the talon 4 it used to be mine, they r good but I found they don't sit on ur back very well when weighted . It holds a lot though and they r pretty expensive new :0)

Personally I think the wingnut is the best bumbag kinda pack iv ever had. It's very comfortable and holds lots if u require it too!

I'd quite like to try a wingnut. Bumbag is ok for my commute, but I personally wouldn't want to use one for big distances. I find like Ian says, they slacken off, and it might be me being skinny, but they start to dig a bit if not packed optimally.

What can I say? I like bags Most are for set jobs, some better than others and a few I dont even use I just like the look of

Irony is, that once i started bikepacking I try my best not to wear a bag at all (on the bike) and 27 doesn't include bags that strap to the bike....or the ones I've given away

So I plumped for the Ortlieb Hip Pack 2, which arrived today.

To recap, my niggles with the outgoing OMM bum bag, upon which the zip finally gave in, were as follows [and where the Ortlieb scores in square brackets];
A bit more Waterproof would be nice [yes, plus no zip to fail]
Two zipped waist pockets [yes, plus two bottle pockets]
More than one internal comparetment [no, but it does have a pocket on the back into which I can fit a SPOT]
Decent waist belt that doesn't slacken off on you all the time. [we'll see, but seems]

Initial impressions were as Scotroutes indicated; reassuringly heavy
Waist straps look good, and the arrangement of straps appears as though they won't slacken off.
The waist pad and belt are also nicely ventilated, which I like the look of.
Side pockets are all mesh, which is fine (I think), as I can see what's inside them.
The floating pocket at the back also looks like it will hold a waterproof for those on/off rainy days.

So, overall, initial impressions are very favourable and the array of little features seems to offset the overall weight.

Funny bum bags should crop up on the unread post list. Mine fell off me on my way home today....



Might try and repair, or try a deuter one. That Ortleib looks a bit overkill for my needs. Any other suggestions for a similar capacity bag? It's main use will be for ferrying sandwiches and the odd spare layer to and from work.

Scattamah's review of Montane Batpack 6 concur with my experience. Comes with 2 bidons as well. Used one in Tour Aotearoa and it was comfortable over 3 weeks.

Thought I might resurrect this thread rather than start a new one. I need a bit more capacity and flexibility than I currently have with cycling jerseys (with the traditional 3 rear pockets), and toying with a waist pack of some type. I have used normal back-packs up to 22 litres in the past with no major problems (still do in winter when more warm kit is required), but would like to avoid the sweaty back in summer, and increased wear on lightweight waterproof jackets.

Interested to see Ian (I think it was Ian) using a Innov8 pack (not the Ortlieb mentioned below) at the BB200 last October, like this one:

I've started using my Talon 4 a lot more, for rides when I need more than a jersey's worth of stuff with me. I now use a Wildcat top tube bag for tools, so the pack really only contains food and an inner tube, occasionally a down jacket in a dry bag and my Spot.

It's also my go-to dog walking bag as the retractable leash fits perfectly and can be dropped in without taking the bag off.

I'm still using my Lomo waterproof one. Roll top closure, simple design so little to break and keeps everything inside dry ... oh and very cheap too
