Another new gravel bike with interesting bars

Post by JohnClimber »

Yes I like Lauf........as most of you know.

And yes they are pricey because of the rubbish exchange rate.
Not what it was before Brexit

They've just launch a mainly road and gravel bike with mounts on their front fork, 3 bottle cage mounts.
But most interestingly a new take on drop bars flexibility called the Smoothie bars

Uhm, "The Lauf Smoothie handlebar eats vibrations for breakfast" ... more than a good thick wrap of tape or two?

Yep, particularly if you double wrap this instead of a stiff metal bar.

Do they work if you do fasted early morning rides?

Looks a very nice bike though and it's good to see companies trying to be innovative as well as practical with their designs.

We go out into the hills to lose ourselves, not to get lost. You are only lost if you need to be somewhere else and if you really need to be somewhere else then you're probably in the wrong place to begin with.

For a minute there I thought they were going to reinvent 25.4 bars.... which are better on rigid bikes!

That actually looks very nice, however.... every time someone comes up with these sort of things it reminds of two things it reminds me of two things

1, Girvin flex stem
2, this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emper ... ew_Clothes

No provision for FD unless wireless - odd. And no way to fit guards. I just wrote something and deleted it as it would fit better on the CTC forum

Did it include the words "Tartan Thermos and Ron Hill Tracksters"??

Ha .. no, some grumblings about short-sighted design or lack of backward compatibility and practicality in favour of 'performance positioning'...

Lauf aren't the only ones so not aimed at them specifically, but you're riding long/far enough to need comfort bars and 40mm tyres, in northern Europe, but you can't fit guards? (maybe you can, if so the hidden eyelets are so well hidden they could do with highlighting it and I take some of the criticism back )

They do have a threaded BB, good to see that becoming more common spec again.

i really like this not for the bars, but it has enough bottle holders and fork bosses and just looks great, shame i'll never be able to afford 1 though :-bd
it's not that I can and others can't, it's that I will and others won't.

Do people riding this sort of bike on gravel or on ultra-distance ITTs actually fit guards?
It may be nice to have the option for a bit of touring but I don't think this bike is aimed at riders that fit mudguards...

I would if I was training on it over the winter. I guess this counts as a summer bike. And I'd be using guards on any event over 12hrs or so, stay comfortable and stay quick, but perhaps I'm just soft :)
