Arkose 3 or Pickenflick?

Post by Charliecres »

Which would you choose for general gravel and road duties? Nothing seems to touch these for value at the moment.

Pickenflick - Rival 1x £1200

Arkose 3 - 105 super-compact £1025 with trade-in

Thanks. Yes, have considered the Ribble but the spec is lower than the Arkose and the gearing makes less sense to me.

I would say, maybe Arkose, but sadly because of who owns Evans now, I could not morally, personally buy anything from them.

Have you thought about sonder bikes as an option?

Yup, I think I’ve looked at all the options. I was pretty much settled on an Arkose till the recent price drop on the Pickenflick. Never owned a Ti bike and this seems a good opportunity to give it a go.

Will you ever want to fit mudguards? Not sure the pick has them if that's the case.

My 2 pence in the Arkose. But only cos I don't like substandard built ti frames. And unless they've had the picknflick built by one of the OCD ti builders I wouldnt wanna bet if the welds had been contaminated...

No offence to onOne/PlanetX off course... aside from the fact that I've seen many a frame being spares and repairs and even one report on my buddies carbon frame which had some hole somewhere... Hechased it up just to get told it wasn't honna affect structure or performance!!

Not much between them tbf. Versatility/wider tyres of the Arkose vs the more desirable/better ride of the Pickenflick.

I'd go with the Pickenflick - I think you'll enjoy riding it more. I've got a Planet X Ti frame (a Titus) and it's a lovely ride. There's a few people on here wih Pickenflicks who've done a lot of miles on them.

(bias disclaimer not needed...)

Had a look at the Pickenflick, that's a great buy. Only £175 more to see how a Ti bike works for you? Hard to say no. If I was being picky (sorry) the PnF geo is too slack/long trail for my liking (slacker HA and less fork offset) and the BB is almost 10mm higher than the Arkose. It's short for it's sizes also, like a CX race bike simply with a degree of the HTA. BUT - there's no right answer on geometry we're all different there, and Titanium can ride so well.

I bet the mythical Ti ride is equalled by fatter tyres run at a lower pressure (speaking as a Ti bike and Arkose rider).

In Evans defence they've only *just* been taken over by Ashley whereas Planet X's who ethos is modelled on his business methods.

Nope, it's an XL 2017 Arkose 4 with 105/hydro brakes. Lovely bike but not being used.

Went for the Pickenflick with Rival 22 in the end. The lure of titanium and 0% finance was too strong to resist. Thanks for the input, everyone.
