Shoe sole repair - recommend me a glue please?

Post by wriggles »

Part of the sole on my much loved Specialized Rime is starting to detach due to too much walking and not enough riding  . I'd very much like to keep these shoes going and so want to stick the rubber sole back onto the bit that the cleats go through. Please recommend me the best glue for this?

In my experience, nothing will last 'that' long due to the bending of the sole. If it's in an area where bending is limited, Araldite (or other epoxy) will work okay. If it's in a high bending area, I've had better success with contact adhesive such as Evostik.

Both will require that the surfaces are properly clean and they'll both need clamping for the best result. I've also used small self-tapping screws before to reattach the soles on my walking boots.

I'd recommend Freesole. It's flexible and has held on well for me in the past.

I have a pair of Rime shoes with the same problem. Haven't got round to fixing them yet.

Find your local cobblers and ask them what they use.

I once asked my cobbler in Shrewsbury what he used...he said Bostik something something something...the important part (type) is the part that I didn't catch and was in too much of a hurry to ask him to repeat.

Google - "rock climbing shoe repair".

Climbers repair / resole all the time. They are the experts in this.

I've used shoegoo to repair a pair of timberlands in an area that flexes, worked quite well, although my repair wasn't very neat

I glued some Shimano shoes that did the same. Used contact adhesive and six months on they are still going strong.

Don't use Gorilla glue. It doesn't flex enough. Been there, tried it, cleaned the residue off n took it to cobblers.

I used to have a 2 part mix up glue from America that was much better. Used it all up tho.
