Rim width vs Tyre width - rule of thumb?

Post by ootini »

Hi,

Just wondering if there is a guide or rule of thumb regarding rim width and compatible tyre width?

There's the ETRTO tables but I've seen 1.5 to 3 times the internal width as a suitable match. The profile of the tyre will change according to the rim it's on so even if a rim is technically suitable it might not be right for that tyre. Annoyingly MTB tyres use imperial units for widths and rims use metric.

At least they're decimal inches, not 2 and 5/8ths"
