Interesting they wouldn't let you reserve, I'll remember that ta. They've always insisted I have to. Maybe it's just me of course - "oh noooo, it's Reg again, make sure he reserves because we'll need to ensure we put those special measures in place beforehand".....

No I just think the lass was having a bad day there were some strange people in the station to be fair ,where i as I was beeming got my 4 days of work and it's my birthday to boot , time to drink and eat a lovely curry with the family at the local establishment , apparently Ariva don't have the facilities to reserve bikes
Edit ,just phoned ariva and they confirmed that there's no booking available on that route but the conductor will normally squeeze on what he can

I've been running the numbers and I reckon I'm up to about 7kg of luggage, plus water.

Roughly breaks down as:
  • Navigation = 350g (maps, GPS, batteries)
  • Shelter = 2.2kg (tarp, bivvy, sleeping bag, mat, pillow)
  • Cooking = 500g (Ti pot + Ti mug + 8g stove + fuel + cutlery)
  • Food = 2kg (packing it all in, not planning to stop anywhere)
  • Clothes = 750g (complete guess at this stage)
  • Lights = 300g (bike lights + head torch)
  • Tools = 800g (tube, pump, tools, spares)
Plus stuff I've inevitably forgotten ...

Anyway, that would be about 9kg TLS-savings over last year's rookie attempt :-bd

Ti pot AND a Ti mug.

Bike lights AND a head torch

More TLS training required. :-bd

Two mugs/pots work for me — I can have noodles going in the big mug (pot) while having a brew on at the same time in the little mug. Compared to the JetBoil + mug I took last year, it's already half a kilo lighter. If I really was on one then I'd drop the big mug and half the fuel, saving a further 170g, but it all gets a bit marginal then.

Bike lights — to be legal, they must be attached to the bike not the head. And anyway the headtorch is tiny (Petzl e+Lite mk2 @ 30g), for around camp.

Anyhow, I do need to leave some unnecessaries in the bag for next year's TLS

I have my own TLS question for the more experienced members

Using WRT as the last shake down ride before bikepacking Le Jog the weekend after.

For clothes /sleeping I am considering taking {{on WRT and Le Jog}} a down jacket and a sleeping bag with a comfort limit of 13C; weighs 400g with a fill weight of 125g
Suspect on its own the sleeping bag will be underrated
Wear the down jacket in the evening, then at night if cold.
Feels a daft idea, though pondering to camp in the back garden at the weekend to test.

Thoughts?
Anyone else take a lightweight yet underrated sleeping bag and sleep in down jacket?
Seems a good way to make an item (the down jacket) multi-use; a concept Stuart mentioned once.

Tried to get the photos off this but was not able to.
Its the second and third photo to examine closely.
This puts the packing in bike packing.

I hope its just a joke fire lighter.
Apologies if this has been done already.

Bag + jacket = Very good way of doubling stuff up yes - so long as the total rating covers the expected night time temps . Was out last night in my 5degC 395g sleeping bag, a bamboo baselayer (socks, leggings, top), plus a Montane down hat, and to be honest it was quite nippy. Just slightly the wrong side of comfy. In two weeks time, and 800 miles further Pole-wards, will 13degC leave you a bit, literally, exposed perhaps?

Just done a little search: Thurso average May night time temperatures = 5degC. Make of that what you will .

(PS Wilky, 800g sounds fairly hefty for "tools/spares" ? Genuinely interested to hear what food you're taking? )

hadn't thought to check the average night time temps.
Hmm, 5degC
take the warmer sleeping bag, not much more bulky; can't sleep if cold.

Lightweight sleeping bag plus light down jacket is certainly one way to go.

Tools and spares - even with "lightweight" stuff I reckon on 650g. Decent tools tend to be a bit heavier. Electronics like GPS, camera, phone are similarly heavy items.

Lights: Exposure Joystick plus Moon rear light are 110g. Joystick can go on bars or helmet, rear light clips to rear of seat harness. Add something like the Drok USB light which will work for a general camp light off your backup battery.

Shelter: this is one area where money does get you less, err more.

Clothes: thermal top and shorts (something dry for the bivvies) plus a spare pair of socks and a buff are 600g

I haven't even thought about packing yet. I'll be riding with wifey and some initial thought are:

Cooking, I'll take my one person stuff and share.
Sleeping, two shelters she can carry her own stuff.
Water, I'll bring the trailshot and share. She'll be in a panic before leaving anyway and will take a full Camelbak.
Food, I'll bring some and plan some pub/supermarket/petrol station stops.
Route, I've sort of got a plan. She's never wild camped before so it should be interesting.

It's a bit like shopping for Christmas food: the shops are only shut for two days and you've already got full cupboards at home so why do you need two trips to the supermarket filling a trolley each time?

Start with an empty bike and think through each item and make it justify its selection. Then look to see if you've any duplicates. Now start rationalising: minimal toolkit; FA kit; etc. At this point you haven't spent any extra cash, you are just making the best use of what you've got.

Nice list. The chopsticks hidden away at the bottom there are a neat touch of exotica too . Um, have you been to Dolgellau Chinese Cottage before though .

TBH my list won't be much different. A few items are different, i.e. Joystick rather than Strada, and things might be packed in different places but there's not much there that I won't have. Knee warmers and the 3/4 baggies are the two biggest I suppose. Mug cosy - use a bit of clothing that you aren't using at the time. Does the jacket have a hood? If so then ditch the woolly hat. Wallet - debit card and a bit of cash in a ziplock bag. Keys (plural)?

When you list everything out it always looks like a lot but a lot of items are low weight/bulk and if packed well it's surprising where it all goes.

I have a monster spreadsheet
Need to, otherwise I would forget something
Helps with TLS; afterwards go through the spreadsheet and remove stuff not needed, and add things that are needed.

My spreadsheet for my HT550 kit has tabs for each section, with all of my bike-packing kit, with every item weighted, with a column to tick to indicate if it's included, this then automatically adds it to the total for that page and updates the summary page :ugeek: The summary page is in both kg and lb to compare to other peoples kit as there is no standard way, oh and it also has separate totals which include/exclude worn clothes/food/water to compare the total weight and how much the bike will weigh.

For weeks now the first thing I do when I get to work after turning my computer on is look at the spreadsheet and see where I can trim a few grams off... is counselling available for this?
