Maxxis B+ tyre - some advise please....

Post by metalheart »

Having a couple of B+ bikes and with the imminent onslaught of winter I'm after some more suitable rubber than my wtb ranger/trail boss combo.

I've always seems to get on with Maxxis so thinking I'd give them a shot.

So, a couple questions:

Which tyres? I've got on with HR and HR2s on 26 & 29er respectively, so happy to try that on the front. What about minions though, never had any so no direct experience. I'll trade grip/pick up over drag on the front but HR F&R on the 26 was drrrrraggggggeeee... 29er choice is HR2 F/Ardent Rs a result. Rekon worth a shout for the rear?

What compound? Is it worth the extra for triple over dual compound (other than the weight saving) as triple seems to be £15+ more on already expensive tyres...

Anything else to consider?

Oh, I'm looking 2,8" as 35mm rims on the SolarisMAX and I need a thinner tyre than the 3" on the Sherpa as I can't get into the bottom two gears at present (non boost crankset...)...

My Loki came with the HR2 27.5x3.0 and a Rekon + 2.8 on the back, I found the combo a little draggy so I swapped to Trail Boss, I am tempted to swap back for winter mud fun, the HR2 at least anyway.

As MH knows, I run NN 3.0's front and rear.

I had NN's on my first set of wheels. Found them a bit fragile, but I did like the grip (over the wtb). Could be tempted to give the specialized a whirl though (aye, you can take the man out of Aberdeen....). How do they measure up though, are they proper 3"?

Anybody able/prepared to advise on casing choice?

Hi buddy

I was racing my fatbike all last season in xc on b+ wheels and as such have all sorts of tyres laying around I need to get shot of.

X2 schwalbe rocket ron 2.6 (one has a single tubeless worm) holds tubeless fine. Only used for two xc races

X2 specialised Ground control 3.0 couple of hundred training miles on these, stans residue but good to go

X1 wtb trail blazer. Not actually sure I ran this?

I have also got a pair of maxxis 2.8’s which are still on the rims. Rekon+ ikon+. To be honest the rekon+ is right on the money for front end grip, the ikon out back provides less resistance and grip than the gc’s

How I have an xc 29er I can’t justify all this rubber so will trim down to just one set, if any take your fancy drop me a message
