The Bothy Baggers Thread

Ok, I can't see a thread for this anywhere so I thought I would start one and see what happens. Since the publication of the Bothy Bible, Joe and I have visited eight bothies in our locale. He now has a map on the wall he puts pins in when he bags one. Anything that motivates him to want to go outside is good with me. Our list so far is as follows: (S indicates spent the night there).

Anyone else care to list theirs? UK only please. You don't have to have spent the night there - just stopping in is enough. Oh and can we please not have a debate about the rights or wrongs of the Bothy Bible - we have done that already.

Ooh that looks good. Great to hear it as I have been hatching a plan to go to Islay and Jura to visit the four there. From the descriptions in the Bothy Bible they sound like they would all be quite a challenge to get a bike to, but we like that sort of thing.

Yes I guess it is open to interpretation as to what exactly constitutes a bothy. I guess if you consider it one then that is good enough!

It still puts you in the lead (for now!) The overnight designation is a good one. I will add that to mine.

my list is pretty scant but here we go:

• A'Chuil bothy - Glenfinnan - practically a hotel this one, Electric available!
  Corrlarach bothy - Locked up so camped outside.

Its good to see that the MBA have updated the maps on their website. The old ones were wilfully obtuse, which seemed a bit silly.

I too have been thinking of another fat bike trip into the bothies (esp. Ruantallain) on Jura too. Brilliant coasts of raised beaches and caves to explore but the deer ticks need planning for!

An Cladach was OK from the north (I went in that way - only a few hours at most), a few carries over the injected dykes that cut across the shoreline, a river (or two?).

but much harder from the south (I left that way the following day, a half day at least)... a bigger river and a big carry over the by the lighthouse if you can't get round under the headland/cliffs below

I actually got to 233 Munroes and abandonned them for Bothy-bagging.
Regrets:
1) everyone speaks highly of Peanmeanach, which I've not been to - in fact I've not visited a single bothy in the Southwest Highlands & Islands region. Weird!
2) I've walked to Loch Chiarain twice but never stayed over.
3) I've passed with yards of Suileag 3 times in last couple of years on HT/HT reccie but never veered off the track to actually see it!

I'm exploring a couple of local Northumberland sleeping huts, of which I have slept in two recently.
I've got to all these bothies by the quaint (and fulfilling) habit of looking on a map, planning a route and then riding or walking there.
I'll continued to do this even though I received a book recently as a present

not many as mostly just shiver in a bivi bag but :
mosedaile cottage (lakes ) - verry good bothy , sofas and good stove but boggy approach too boggy to ride but bring ur own fuel as not normally anything left ... have done several new years party's here as its local , but miles away from anywhere !

Gregs hut - allso good but small bothy (pennies) , good stove in sleeping room, lots of fuel normal brought up by people, good for skiing as some great terrain above it, allso good for bikes






White laggan galoway forest - good bothy bit grubby compared to other 2 listed , some mice , good for biking as just of cycle route , might allso be good for fly fishing as next to lake that apparently has good fishing ( newton stewart angling ascosiation ) , was logs when we went and forrest around for fuel
