Swept bars

Post by whitestone »

I'm in the process of building up the Spearfish frame purchased from IanPV. I'll be picking up the forks tonight so the next item for consideration will be the handlebars. This is a long term project BTW, I'm not in a rush until I am.

My initial thoughts were to go with Jones Loops. I've got them on the fat bike but I'm not sure about having them on the Spearfish. Has anyone used the Salsa Bend 2 MTB Bar with 25deg bend?

Any other options worth considering?

I'm a big fan of the Velo Orange Crazy bar. You might need to persuade yourself about the looks at first but I've found once taped and fitted, the looks grow on you until eventually you actually like them ... but maybe that comes from an appreciation of their other physical attributes? I've got the alloy ones which aren't classified as suitable for mountainbiking but I've suffered no dramas so far.

Not the widest bar on paper but they do feel wider than they are ... if Gairy finds them suitable, then they'll be wide enough for most people. They're only available in 25.4mm but I consider this a positive.

Interesting. I should have added - 31.8mm clamp. The Clarence looks the best of those.

Don't limit yourself Bob, just use a shim.

Was it those or the Molokos that you reviewed?

Both, I haven't finished with the Moloko yet but I will say that while they're a pleasing shape, they are a very rigid bar ... not that it'll matter too much on a bouncy build.

I have a set of the Velo Orange Crazy Casey bars, black steel ones, have the shim too. Just haven't got around to fitting them yet! Thought it would make a nice change on my rigid SS from the 710 loops that are on there at the minute

I've used Genesis Alt bars which are very similar but maybe only 20 deg of sweep? I ordered them via my lbs and they were £20 or £25 so quite a bargain. I only took them off as I couldn't get my luggage to fit due to the alignment of the brake hoses. I had shimano brakes back then. Now swapped to Hope which keep the hoses parallel to the bars so might put them back on.

I've got the Jones loops on my spearfish, and couldn't imagine using anything else. For long distance stuff, they are spot on.

I've run Loops on my last two Spearfish. Used for normal riding, bikepacking and 24 hour racing.

Once you get them set up correctly, they are a fantastic combo.

Moving the Loops over from the fat bike is definitely an option, a zero cost one to begin with. They are carbon as well :-bd

That just means I now need some bars for the fat bike

Probably selling my Caseys Crazy Bars very soon if you wanted to try them Bob. Need to buy a set of carbon 710 loops first...

Has anyone got a pic of the caseys crazy bar with a Jones loop to see the differences as I quite fancy a crazy bar for the commuter I think thanks

A buddy of mine bought some crazy bars but sent them back as they were crazy heavy! I don't know if they do different (lighter!) versions though?

I used the Bend2 bars on my tourer for 2 years, comfortable and not too odd looking, oddly enough I hit the order button on a second set for my new bike today.

These are cheap & 25deg bend, I'm getting on well with them, or rather I was before I broke my hand

I notice that there's the word "carbon" on the image in that link, just assumed it was a stock photo from some time ago as I haven't seen the OG bars on their site for a while. I've got a set of the Mary bars but they are very narrow, about 550mm or so.

Mine are the alloy version and measure 690mm.
They did disappear from the website for a while. not noticed the carbon one before and pretty sure they're not on there now.
