So looking on the net this morning ive found the new xt di2 for 645quid. Watching some reviews it looks really impressive however i cant find anywhere where it says about the expected battery life? Would these systems be useless over say a 5 or 6 day trip? I guess once the battery is dead so are the gears?

Not sure of overall battery life, but I have read that a 1x11 setup lasts a lot longer, as the front mech servo is much more thirsty when shifting.

Not sure how long you'll get though. Mike ran Di2 for the TDR in 2016 and I don't recall him saying he needed to charge it. However, IIRC Lael Wilcox had to charge her Di2 road system twice on the Trans Am in 2016 - but road riding tends to have more shifting than MTB.

Be fine for a a week long trip. I rode about 500k on a full battery and the indicator showed I'd used up about 1/4 of its capacity. I've found that the battery will also charge very quickly via a usb cache battery.

I've seen it mentioned that Lael shifts a lot compared to most people.

My mate has di2 on his gravel bike and did thousands of shifts on a 170 mile ride. I'll ask him how often he charges the bike next time I see him...

The battery is in the seatpost but there's a charging port on the bar display, so no messing about to recharge, just plug it in.

Got a roadie mate who's been on Di2 for a few years now, he rides 1-3 times a week & reckons it's months between charges & has never run any of them flat.. Know it's all relative to how much you shift, but he thinks you'd get a full weeks riding out of a charge..

Had a quick go on his new Di2 equiped Venge at the weekend, nearly choked when he told me what it was worth!

I've been told that the software is the same for all Di2 road & mtb stuff atm, so everything should be cross compatible..

I had a chat about this with Mike last autumn, and he did charge it a few times on that run (he was just using a rear derailleur); think he had a spare battery that he swapped out when charging. He also mentioned some development work with Shimano on an integrated system, with Dynamo feeds to both lighting, shifting and external charging. Good idea for a road tourer, but I wouldn't rely on it off-road, at the speed I pedal.

the main "rule" is that mechs, and shifters, have to be of the same group.
so MTB mechs and road shifters will work fine.
an example that wouldn't work is: a MTB rear mech, to say use a MTB cassette, and a road front mech. in this example the front mech would also have to be MTB.
not a problem for a 1x system as only one mech.

climber buttons are road, and ultegra shifters are also road, so no problem there.

shimano have a compatibility PDF on their website

there is now a bar end charge plug for those that don't wish to use the stem mounted charge-junction box.
shimano PRO make a stem into which a junction box can be inserted.
saves having the charge-junction box zip tied to the stem.
the display is not necessary.
some Garmin computers can display gear, or simply look.

I have di2 on my road bike. Charge it every few months or so, it must do a good 500-1000 miles between charges if not more. This is the older 6700 ultegra series with external battery.

Only on e bikes.
Don't know why but I got a notification of a Bosch software upgrade that deals with this.
Apparently it saves gear changes by upping the motor torque.
