New Bike Suggestions

Post by dlovett »

Hello,

I potentially can get a new bike from the cycle to work scheme and was after some suggestions.

1) Its to Mainly go on road, for use on mainly urgent tarmac rather than country roads
2) It might occasionally be used on gentle ITT's such as the SDW and perhaps this years YD200 even BB200.

Ideally no more than 1k, so far the Sonder Camino Ally looks good.

Also for this kind of use would you guys suggest 650b or 700c? Which works better on each surface?

Its to replace my road bike, full susser and round town hack, I'm keeping my Sonder Vir Fortis as my all round MTB and I also have a Cove Hummer, but how capable of road are these kind of Adventure bikes, anywhere near the league of my proper toys?

Many thanks in advance for your words of wisdom.

If I'm correct, you have to add 10% commission to alp kit

Arkose in some form is very hard to beat in terms of spec' and value. My personal favourite is 650b with 50c tyres but that's not a standard spec' sadly.

That's the evens' one isn't it? I'll have a look.

This suggests off road 650b is the more comfortable wheel.

It is Duncan.

I find 650b more comfortable as it generally allows a larger volume tyre to fit within the frame / forks.

And for 99% urban road use are they any slower with a slick like say a Schwalbe Marathon than a 700c traditional wheel/slick tyre?

I used mine on the T-N last year with Maxis Re-fuse tyres and it didn't feel slow on the road. Overall diameter is very nearly the same as something smaller fitted to 700c, so it's tyre choice rather than wheel size that makes the difference there.

I'm thinking the Camino with 650b and WTB Byway 650x47 are looking good. Not much else that good spec wise for the money that I have seen. Still I believe Whyte have one that might be worth looking at.

I saw a Marin four corners elite today running sram apex 1x11 and 29 2" mtb tyres. Reduced to £1k in my local bike shop.

Could fit your bill....

As I don't own a 29er of any kind, I've not seen any 23-25 slick tyres for a 29er, or do I need to just look harder?

700c and 29" is exactly the same size. As long as the rim width isn't overly wide, a 700c slick will happily live on a 29" rim ... they're identical in every way.

As far as i understand it, the Marin can accept 650b, 700c and 29ers as long as hub, cassette and brake rotors all match up.
Plus, 700c and 29" are the same wheel, just width differs usually.

Just seen this from my lbs, might have to wait two weeks till they have a demo one. It has Sram 1x11 Apex groupset with Tektro cable operated hydraulic brakes though, which put me off a bit.

Whyte Glonecoe £1299 650b 47mm tyre. Talk about "Fast Urban Commute"! #whytebikes #questadventure #commuting #cyclinginworthing — at Mercedes-Benz Brooklands.

Still the Camino is £1199 with 650b 47mm tyre, rival1 groupset and brakes.

I'm currently procrastinating over a similar choice. Sonder Camino, Marin Four Corners Elite or Arkose X. All run 1 x, roughly same price, and all can accept 650b wheels in some form.. ....

Have you looked at the Specialised Sequoia and the Genesis range as well as bombtrack would be worth a look too.

Do like the look of the bomb track bikes but can't remember the prices off hand

To be honest part of the reason for doing it is two just have two bikes and now spare bits of bike cluttering up the house/garage. A new Rvans has opened nearby so I will go and chat to them and see if I can exchange the 700c for a 650b set.
