Knighton TCW

Post by Robster »

Got a couple of days off and bought the maps for this trip. Still lots to sort before actually doing any peddling but is there any good parking in Knighton?
cheers Rob

Probably okay around the railway station ... and do folk not realise it actually runs better W - E?

I can see the logic of having the wind behind you but is the riding better than the difference in ascent/descent? I thought there was more down hill E-W?
I guess it's because the Imba guide is E-W that people ride it that way and it's more romantic to end in Wales and the sea

There's a little layby at SO 280725 that I've used a couple of times.

Certainly a bit more uphill I would expect!

You do away with the slog out of Knighton and the stretch though the Elan valley becomes downhill.

I'm not convinced by a romantic end by the sea ... it finishes in the arse end of nowhere (you can't even get a brew) and the sea is still a few miles away

I live not too far from Knighton, have a large garden that's ok for camping, if desperate, half way between Knighton and Rhayader, or if anyone wants a lift anywhere locally! Whisky works as a local currency :-)

Feel free to shout if anything is needed! Kettle is always on!

Thanks guys for the advice and the offer of a place to sleep.

Maps turned up on Tuesday. So drove up to Knighton and parked at the station.

I think the romance of reaching the sea is reduced by the emptiness of Dovey junction but heading West is still the preferred option for an English person. (Head west towards the setting sun or faraway lands?) I'd agree that Dovey to Knighton is probably a better cycling direction. There's always going to be a lot of hills that I will push up but as Stu points out some good lengths of riding downhill. I guess the answer is to do it the other way someday at least then I'll see where I should have turned.

Fair play to the guys doing it in a day or the double!

Photos and write up later. Met a couple of interesting people along the way too.

Thanks again for all the advice, cheers Rob
