Gas Tank 'dwidget' - by Bentley Components

Post by drjon »

well, its a bit precious, but i tend to try and avoid rub on frame, stem or headset with gas tank straps. i had an idea and Mark Bentley made it a reality. as such i guess it isnt strictly MYOG !

Neat and simple ... as all the best things are. Although, you probably need a Ti one Jon.

so this is prototype mk 2. its been in use for a little while, a bit simpler in that it works as a bushing rather than having a bearing inside. as a result it would be a little less complex to produce.

Andy Toop at Backcountry.scot is acting as test pilot - and i am hoping to have another ambassador :-)~ on board soon. once it has gone through a thorough test we'll work out where to go with it.

So far, it works superbly...

That's very cool

Can you explain the bushing bit? How does it spin independently of the stem?

its made of 3 parts... the outer ring, which has the slot for the strap, rotates around 2 inner pieces that sandwich it and allow the headset to be tensioned etc. it takes some precision to make it so there isnt too much friction on the outer ring without it being a sloppy fit. the white one uses a bearing that the outer ring is pressed on to and then 2 inner pieces to mount to the steerer. this requires numerous operations and a specific bearing size, which would make the overall time and cost of production high.
