7 miles into my first real ride on the new bike and a pedal falls off and it appears to have stripped out most of the thread. Aargh!

Last night's ride.
Gentle slog uphill into a headwind, realise I've forgotten my water bottle.
Stop off at pub, couple of pints, buy a couple of bottles of water.
Get to the bivvy spot, realise I've left the bottled water at the pub. FML.
Good thing my riding buddy had enough with him for us both to have a morning brew.

Yesterday’s ride but still a ride!

First time I’ve ridden a bike for months. Aside from going to work and the occasional Monday pub based social ride. I enjoyed it!

Met up with the Craigie in Leeds to see Divided. Which is a great wee filum. Had a restrained evening of socialising afterwards then set off towards Oxenholme in Monday.

It was sunny but not too warm. There weren’t too many assholes in cars (that we met anyway) and not much mud on the route. There was plenty of chatter and banter and quite a lot of waiting for me to catch up too.

Didn’t take many pictures but this one had to happen. https://flic.kr/p/HpYTZw
(On my phone so you’ll have to click the link for now)

I enjoyed operating a bicycle and plan to do it again soon!

Ps - thanks Bob and others for the route tips in my other thread. We used most of the off-road suggestions which were reyt good :-bd

Rose both days this weekend :o

First time in a looong time. Out with Mark yesterday then caught a lift up to the lakes with some folk doing a navigational fell running event.

A nice loop from Patterdale returning by that Ullswater trail. Forgotten how much I like that trail.

And an unexpected bonus after of bumping in to Greg who had done the running event.

A quick 39km (couldn't make it up to 40km due to time constraints) on the gravel bike, dodging the rain, to pick up 3 veloviewer squares that will hopefully be the start of getting my main square further north.

I'm currently recovering from some terrible flu-type thing so the lungs - and legs - are struggling but I managed a fab ride up to Loch Einaich. I was in shorts and short-sleeves, walkers were still in fleeces and when I came through town there were folk in full ski gear fresh off the mountain. Got to love Aviemore :)

Have they improved the track up to the loch Colin? I don't remember it being that smooth when we did it a few years ago.

That's the new(er) top track Bob. It went in a few years ago to bypass the narrow lower track which wasn't suitable for vehicles anyway. The old Aviemore water supply runs along it.

I like taking that route up the glen on account of the views. The older/lower track is by far the better way of coming back out though.

Ah, I remember there being a split in the track and the recommendation to take the lower one. I think we used the lower going up and down the glen.

The lower one was actually blocked by a landslip a couple of years ago (well, it involved a short carry). It's just become rideable again.

Weather today was too good to miss, so I went out after work to see if the local mountains had thawed out enough for a proper ride up high.

Headed up Glen Dye past Charr bothy.

Image

A loooong climb got me to the summit of Mount Battock at 778m.

Image

Not all the snow had thawed yet.

Image

A steep and speedy descent lost most of the height as the sun started to set.

Image

Then it was back up to the top of the Fungle before more descending in the dying light and a few road miles to complete the loop under starry skies.

Still in flu recovery mode but fit enough for a loop round Nethy and Ryvoan.

I thought this photo might interest those undertaking the Cairngorms Loop as it shows Bynack Mor (in the sun) and the fast receding snow.

Just a couple of evening rides here this week.
Not seen any swallows yet, but the bluebells are out as are rapeseed fields. It's a good time of year.

11km with our 4yo twins today. Perfect weather, cheese butties & a game of pooh sticks. Followed by a big crash for one lad and a sub standard-load of nettle stings for the other to balance it out.
They're still up for another ride so all's good. :-bd

A lovely getting to know you ride on the fat bike.
A couple of miles of road from home to the sustran Phoenix trail. Then through princes risborough up kop hill (ugh) and then round some bridleway at white leaf cross. I ended up somewhere I'd not planned to be but found my way back to risborough, and a cup of tea and a muffin via the Ridgeway. Then the Phoenix trail home, and when home...

40k all in. And for the first time in many years I got air! Not much admittedly, but the fattie is surprisingly nimble

And got a lovely "OH. MY. GOD!" from a young lad when he saw the bike (with lefty) trunding towards him (towards not at..) :-bd

Pickers, the new bike is looking good..
Not so much a gravel grinder.... more a gravel (mud and tarmac) groveller...

Ta mate, all's good except the (much wider than I've had before) handlebars.
Trying to fit them between the trees has resulted in a couple of unscheduled dismounts.....

Last wednesday, mostly lanes, around Llangollen.
Started in Llngollen and cycled with my daughter along the canal towpath to Trevor basin, where a cream tea was had before riding back.
Left daughter in Llan then rode the lane north side of the river Dee to Glyndyfrdwy station where I hoped to get a cup of tea and a cake at the cafe. Didn't happen - no cafe, so carried on another two miles to Carrog...

Image
Image
Tea and cake followed,

before riding along the A5 back to Glyndyfrdwy, stopping at Owain Glyndwrs' mound for a look-see.

Image

From the top of said mound...
Image
Then I made a lucky navigational error which took me to the Nant y Pandy (remains of) slate mill. A shady green footpath along a little brook leading to the collapsing mill buildings
Image
There was a horrible tarmac climb to the top of the Ceiriog Forest where I was able to notch up one of the grid-refs for this years WRT..
Image
All downhill from there back down to Llangollen via Allt y Badi, an interesting steep rocky track (starting at SJ 210 400) that had my thighs screaming in protest before I reached the bottom.

MuddyPete convinced me that a quick toddle up the woods was a good idea last night, which it was until the heavens opened and drenched us. Just finished cleaning the machine - took longer to clean than to ride as usual.

Couple of pubs involved - Red Lion and Black Lion. If we'd have managed to find a White Lion, we'd have done a Three Lions Tour.

The only(?) baffling bit of the evening was Pete mentioning "chilli knees" in the pub. I made the perfectly reasonable assumption that this was some new novel food item that could be requested at the bar, similar to crisps or pickled eggs. Turned out his knees were, er, chilly.

Perhaps M-P will be along with an embarrassing photo at some point.....

Well that went well, not!

Thought we'd go for a potter round the lanes over the border in the promised land (Lancashire). Got the road bike out thinking it was a bit light when I realised that I'd replaced the cassette but not got round to fitting the chain  That job finally done we set off but Cath feels her lurgy is worse than she thought so heads home to bed. I start riding but as soon as I stand to put pressure on the pedals there's a clunking noise and the "chain" skips. Hmm. I reckon it's either the pawls or the springs in the hub. Oh well. Grand total of 2km

A loop around Cowal with a bivi (including being overtaken by somebody on a Salsa with drops and Tribars and Puking Gnome forks, anyone off here?) Nice scenery and weather and very quiet on the offroad sections.
