I love my 520 for short events. There's enough space for most of Yorkshire / Lancs, and you can top the battery up off a lipstick sized power bank whenever you stop. I've done 24hour events with it.

For anything bigger, the Etrex 30 is great. It just works.

I'll offer some dissenting advice. Screw discs for road bikes - anything that makes a road bike heavier has to be avoided. I don't really mean it, but ask yourself why you want a road bike. Heartbeat 400 was fun. It took me 199km to realise that it was in reference to the Nick Berry police saga. Such a good route, there were no horrid bits. Wholeheartedly recommended.
