Re: Nice gear you don't use?
For general stuff not getting used....ive got 2 sleeping bags, a tent, tarps, hammocks and various cooking setups that have been gathering dust for over a year! I'm considering putting together a loaner kit for family out of one of my many many backpacks (35) Its really getting to me seeing stuff no...

A little more ghetto but what about Sugru or FormCARD melted into shape and stuck into the inner lock ring of grips? (provided they're lock ons)
Atleast if you don't like it they just melt back off.

Re: The post man's been ...
Some birthday goodies from alpkit came today  A size small balance jacket, which actually is small in size unlike most, very pleased so far. A muon head torch, most impressed for the price, bit dim for biking but should work well for running and general use. (plus a second one for my partner) ...

Weekend survived, didn't buy anything "in the sales" but my partner ended up with a brand new TV....dont worry there were no riots and its actually a brand name you can pronounce  But on the Friday I did end up dropping an enormous amount of £££ on a present (talking new bike or even ...

Re: Dear God make it stop!
There was a programme or programmes with Hugh Fernley-Whitter-on a while ago about waste and looking at clothes. Some people were horrified if they were wearing anything older than a year and threw away clothes that they had worn once or not at all. Hmm, the Mountain Equipment fleece that is curren...

A few weeks ago when I started getting serious with my minimalism purge I cut out alot of unwanted advertising. If I dont need it, I dont care if its now cheaper, not buying at saves the most money. I haven't done a bad job....only emails I get now are newsletters from the BB, faraway, BP.com and Al...

Re: kit list time! whats your lightest setup?
Its pretty obvious there has to be consideration for weather and we all gave different comfort levels...i mean how many of you would chose your setup on a regular basis? But when you purely think about raw weight its quite fascinating how little can be achieved. Talking about sub-kilo setups c...

kit list time! whats your lightest setup?
What's the most minimal and ultralight you've ever been for an overnight trip? I'm not talking about lightest comfortable, but pure raw lightweight goal. And how many of you would do it again? Did you find out from experience where that fine line is between ultralight and "stupid-lite"? We...

I hope he's alright! I usually chat with him at the afan valley visitor center, ill have to head around again sometime see how he's doing. Kids local to me do this kind of thing all the time, mostly on motocross tracks near resolven (neath). they could literally get away with murder around here. Ive...

Re: 'Sleeping cold'
For some people it could be not generating enough heat in the first place, after all our body provides the, head, insulation just keeps it in place. My partner is always cold at night, literally to the touch. For her, eating before bed helps. I'm usually a warm sleeper but in different places. Core i...

Re: BIkepacking - impact on local/rural economy
I tend to see bikepacking as a cheaper endeavour than most trips away (despite the growing spend on kit) and probably dont "contribute" much. I hate the idea that any hobby should be cost prohibiting or that spending less means you're not in the cool elite club. I love the bearbones commun...

Re: what do you cook...?
If I'm actually cooking, it'll be something like couscous, pasta, cured sausages chopped, repackaged herbs and small diced veg. All very heavy but sometimes I go out where cooking is the main goal. Ride to camp, camp to ride, ride to cook outdoors, ect If the main goal is the ride itself, then I eat...

Re: Watch
If you're looking at Gshocks, I got some advice a while back from a former SAS member.
He only wears women's or children's G shock watches, they're just as durable but lighter, slimmer and lower profile (and cheaper).
Coming from a guy in that field of work that's a good an endorsement as any.

Re: Water bottle tops
A problem ive had too, a few solutions depending on situation. Mostly use my thermos sports water bottle, fits in a cage, 750ml, has a plastic cover to protect the nozzle that springs back with a button. Best part, its stainless steel! Not the lightest but bombproof, tastes fantastic to drink from a...

Re: Dd hammocks pyramid tent
Was just about to post this myself, got beaten to it! I'm liking the look of the A frame bug tent, my partner isn't too keep on bivy bags (and I'm not too keen on bugs) so this looks like it'll work well under an open tarp? Weight isn't the lightest, or as light as a trekkertent but its still less t...

I sometimes use my accurist sports watch, waterproof, alarms and the best bit...analogue! Mines lasted 3 years before it lost timing but took seconds to correct. Burning sheep? Preposterous! Usually when the welsh have flaming arrows they're pointing them at the English! I'm afraid I cant speak for myself, too young to be in a situation like that. I can speak for my father though, whom worked back and forth between 2 top steel traders for 10-12 years, each time the other offered a pay rise...the stress went up. Money was stable and he was good at his job, but he was...

Re: off topic: anyone here into trail running?
Isn't that because when runners go camping they tend to subscribe to the "mountain marathon" way of packing? I.e. Jetboil, most expencive terra nova laser tent on market, no sleeping bag, tiny ccf matt and sleep in clothes? Either way it needs a better name, fastpacking just sounds like wh...

Re: off topic: anyone here into trail running?
Seems the lack of kit appeals to us all then. lets face it, no matter how light or minimal we ride it can still be alot of kit to deal with. More of an issue if time is short. The "fastpacking" idea I like, though its probably another sales term its still all the ideals bikepacking has of ...

I'm trying to be open to more sports, id like to consider myself more an outdoorsman rather than just a cyclist, hiker, ect. After all, I got into bikepacking before cycling, sounds odd but I'm serious! I loved hiking and exploring, cooking and sleeping outside. Then one day I though doing it by bik...

Re: Bivvy bag instead ofsleeping mat
Think of a bivvy bag as a waterproof jacket for your sleeping bag, a tent does a similar job of keeping rain and wind off of you. Using a bivi inside a full double layer tent is kinda like wearing two waterproofs, redundant. Neither of these offer insulation from the ground, they might stop the wind...
