Re: Anyone made a dropper-specific bag yet?
I’ve also got a Gondola and it’s excellent. No sway, and it’s easy to attach and fill.

“Coming fast down a mountain road always thrilled her; touring the Balkans in her 70s, she was clocked descending at 65mph by a military patrol and reproved for not applying her brakes.”*

Re: Best way to pack down a sleeping bag?
Stick it in a dry bag, kneel on it with the opening open then fold the dry bag coded while still kneeling on it. That’s as small as it will go.

Re: King Alfreds Way.
Agree with all the above. Bits of it wouldn’t be much fun on any bike after a period of wet weather. Certainly doable on a tourer or gravel bike but it’s not what I’d choose. I did it over three days on a rigid 29+ and that seemed about right. Very enjoyable route, bar the bit through and just south...

Brig o’ Turk to Balquhidder via Glen Finglass and Ballimore
Anyone done this track? There’s clearly some steep hike-a-bike but is it likely to be worth the effort? The alternative seems to be an easy cycle trail to the south of Loch Venachar and then the Rob Roy way north alongside the A81, which seems likely to be a bit uninspiring. Is it? This is part of a...

Re: Phone navigation apps
I’ve used ViewRanger, Komoot and RWGPS. ViewRanger was great  , Komoot and RWGPS both suffer from crap maps which are useless for planning an off-road route by anything other than the automated routing option, which is patchy at best. For attaching a phone to the bars, I use one of these https:...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2021
I fell at the last hurdle. No bivy in December. No excuses, just couldn’t be arsed as I had my daughters at home and the weather was poor show. I weighed it up and realised there was no point just to tick an imaginary box.

Re: Favourite bar system, and dropper seat bag?
I use MYOG harnesses for the bars. One is loosely based on an Alpkit Kanga but with additional straps for cinching the bag. It’s rock solid. The other is simpler and makes use of the double bars of a loop bar. Again, it has an additional cinching strap. For the dropper post, it’s a +1 for the Rockge...

After a quick Google, I can only think it’s “F*** you and everything you stand for” by Broken Bones or “Welcome to the Beartrap” by Motörhead. But I’m not confident.
As an aside, I’m impressed that my phone’s auto-correct put that umlaut in when I typed Motörhead.

Re: 2022 Plans (to go with the 2021 Reflections thread)
I need to pull my finger out and do some serious planning. For the first time in decades I have time to do some bigger trips, so an off-road end-to-end of the British mainland seems a good place to start.

It’s not been the best ever year’s riding for me but … Favourite trip: Trans Cambrian Way. I’d been wanting to do it for ages and finally got around to it this summer. We were blessed with great (dry) conditions and did it in leisurely style over three days. No dramas but plenty of fun. Loved it. Fa...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2021
Another last-minute effort from me. I’d intended to go out on Monday night (-3C forecast) but faced with the prospect of a warm house, a nice meal and the need to wave my visiting daughter off, I cracked and put it off till last night (30 Nov, forecast of high winds and rain but a balmy 7C). Anyway,...

Just for info (don’t have one to sell), I love my Crux Duro. Run it tubeless on a gorilla taped Dually with no issues.

Re: Some thoughts on gloves...
I used these on the BB200.

Wore them pretty much non-stop for 23 hours. I was really impressed. Much more comfortable than a wet fabric glove. Reckon they might work well with over-mitts at colder temperatures.

Re: Bivvy a Month 2021
I think an honestly answered, self-administered ‘did I bivy?’ test is the closest we’re likely to get to a definitive answer. Taking the three BB200s where I’ve stopped to rest my eyes, in 2014 I lay asleep in a bivy bag for 3-4 hours and awoke feeling like a new day was dawning. That, to me, is def...

Re: Change of lifestyle maybe ?
My thought would be to look into volunteering of some sort, for a sense of purpose and a reason to feel good about yourself. Also think about things you’ve enjoyed in the past but given up for lack of time or opportunity. Got an artistic streak, enjoy making things, singing or playing an instrument?...

By that criterion I reckon I’ve managed about three bivies in my whole life.Adults (18–64 years) 7 to 9 hours
