Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

Hi all, Thanks for the above post Stu saves me going back through my log which is currently missing. I do have some photo's of a couple to post but at the moment I'm on a tablet so maybe next week sometime. Last BAM was night before last it was cold  So on the positive side that's BAM 2017 com...

Re: BareBones Fatfighters - The weigh in

Hi all, Good to see you all here it's a while since I've been active on the forum. Well done to those who were successful and well done to those that gave it a go but were well maybe not so successful, better to try and all that, and there's always next year. Sad to say I haven't done too well it ha...

Re: Yay, it's cheery Friday.

A very cheery post Reg  With regards the Sparrowhawk I've been fortunate to see a few strikes over the years. Most incongruous was probably by the River Leven in Dumbarton which is a main parking area for the town centre, so lots of coming and going. Sparrowhawk takes a pigeon and proceeds to...

Re: The patron saint of T.L.S.?

On the other hand! It is not my policy to rough it on the mountains unnecessarily, for hard times need no seeking; therefore in addition to much climbing equipment we were heavily laden with tent, sleeping bags, eggs, bacon- the luxuries of a comfort loving world, when hard tack and a couch on the h...

Re: The joy of socks.

Can't find On-One merino socks where I'd usually think to look (Planet X) but from experience of what they do have I'd say avoid the temptingly cheap Planet X merinos as they're very thin, but the Carnacs are certainly good and worth the extra. Haven't tried the Carnac Primaloft Silk ones though, t...

Simon, Re the temp, now just before midnight here, thermometer tells me 30 inside house 29.5 outside. Haven't done much cycling this week myself, can't even begin to think how most of the riders have got this far.

Re: First aid kits & Solo multiday trips

Kit varies, but I nearly always include a good pair of small tweezers and a sewing needle for removal of thorns, skelfs etc. Some cotton buds can also be useful for getting grit out of eyes. Yes, I have had skelf get infected which curtailed a trip as well as having a foreign object removed from the...

Re: Transcontinental 2017 - TCRNO5

Looks as if I'm digging myself into a hole here, when all I wanted to do was add a bit to the conversation! Blackhound, I was not aware of all of the rules so I am glad to hear of that and of your decision to comply with the rules, I have no doubt that whilst it added to the miles I hope the cycling...

Re: Transcontinental 2017 - TCRNO5

I think James and Stuart have put it better than I did about roads. I have looked at the tracks and a number of riders have elected to use 'A' roads in Hungary where cycling is not allowed, whereas some are sticking to quieter roads, maybe not as direct, but quieter, could this be because they know ...

Re: Thoughtful Thursday - Just what is it we're after?

What is it we're after? Can't speak for anyone else, but I had a blast a few weeks back cycling found some of the same stuff that I rode 20 years ago, strangely enough on the same bike (rigid Univega Alpina 504 in case anyone was curious). I was never really into speed as such on the MTB really just...

Re: Transcontinental 2017 - TCRNO5

Not going to say much about some of the points raised above, at least until I formulate my thoughts better. But,, next couple of days will be interesting as here in Hungary cycling on A roads is banned, full stop, period etc. Therefore, if a competitive cyclist makes use of an A road he will be brea...

^^That is hogging awful and looks as if it would be as stable as a .....words fail me  I've got a Carradice Zipped Cape roll and it's great for longer day rides, but, it really only works with Brooks saddles, sure there are work around but usually they either add weight or complexity of bring ...

Re: Now this I like.

Nice enough bike, but, the Kona Sutra has a similar spec, all the braze ons you could need, a steel frame, AND a Brooks B17. I've got 700x40 Nano's on mine at the moment, but if I had the spare dosh I'd seriously think of throwing a decent set of 27.5 wheels on. It also sticks with traditional hub s...

Re: Jersey / gilet orders are GO.

I'd be tempted to say an XL might be a touch roomy (although should still fit okay) with a 39" chest. I'm a 40" chest and am wearing a L in the pics[/quote]

Ta, I'll go for large then. Now got to think of whether I need my name on it or whatever!

Re: Jersey / gilet orders are GO.

Couple of questions. As I've been losing a bit of weight my chest seems to have gone from a 41 ish to 39 ish (as measured a few weeks ago). As I am away from home till Saturday I won't be able to confirm that 39 is still the case. Generally I prefer a 'comfort' fit. Would I be correct in thinking th...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

May was done, so that's 5/5. Had some stuff to do in Szeged so it gave me the chance to do a mini tour and a couple of bivvies in a new area. First night was by a fishing lake/recreational area. The far side of the lake was very quiet and well screened so decided to stop there a bit early rather tha...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

6/6 - bit of ridiculous hike-a-bike in the dark, but well worth it for the view of the Norfolk coast and the novelty of waking up above the tree canopy. It's very nice when you live in a flat place to get above the canopy, gives a good perspective. I had such a plan thwarted recently, but hope to s...

Got one after seeing a post about it on the Bargain Alert Thread. Think I paid about £45, which I thought was a bargain at this lower price it's a steal. Although delivery was slow it arrived within the quoted time. I think it's great, massive but a superb rough weather shelter. Took a few practice ...

Re: Bar end shifters?

Got them on my Kona Sutra. Absolutely no problems adapting to them, to such an extent that the other day when I was riding on the bar ends on the MTB I dropped my hand searching for the non existent bar end. Makes feathering the front derailleur a breeze and if you have problems with indexing on the...
