Re: BB200 planning

After my V-brakes-made-of-cheese fail on last year's BB200, I'm bringing disc brakes this year :-bd Reproofed the 'proofs yesterday. Got some Alpkit Kantju gaiters to try to keep the worst of the weather off my socks and out of my shoes (it's a delaying tactic only, I know). Checked the route — ther...

Re: Get yourself seen

Partially spurred on by this thread I've been looking at USB rechargeable rear lights - the small, silicone strap type. I'm surprised at the low run times though. Any recommendations for something that could be relied on for a full nights riding? The Lezyne Femto lasts for an age on flashing —  htt...

Spokes - from Germany, how are they so much cheaper from there than anywhere in the uk? Even with the £7.50 delivery-to-the-uk charge, still only just over half the price of what we'd pay in the UK. I've no idea why this is so, either.  I've tried sweet-talking one of the LBS in Cambridge, but they...

Re: Packable Shoes

"Bare-foot running" shoes are light and pack small, such as Vibram Five Fingers, or Merrell running shoes.

Pricey, though, just for something to wander about town of an evening, and Five Fingers are weird (but surprisingly comfy, even when trekking over rocky stuff).

Re: Packing - what where, conventions?

I think the important thing is to put sleep kit / stuff which must remain dry seperate from everything else. Agree about Stu's point of the primary need of keeping sleeping kit dry and separated. I agree to the point the dry stuff should be separated , but that doesn't necessarily mean separate on ...

Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike

My ride went pretty okay — of course, Wales being Wales meant I was on a happy-streak, as I'm always happy to be back :-bd The climbs were sublimely uncomfortable for this Flatlander, but I rode up every single one, except The Bwlch — I got over halfway, but didn't have the legs to turn 34/28 any fu...

Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike

Also, if you want a little more off road on the 300, and 400 routes you could divert over the Hergest Ridge on the offas path directly to the West out of Kington. It was on our very first draft route but we removed it through fear of being a bit 'to much' for an audax. And possibly a bit too "...

I've left this far too late to sort out but am struggling to find anywhere reasonable to park my van and leave it. Any ideas? What's everyone else doing? Re: New mobile

Get a phone that does the software/features you want and then put it into a waterproof case. You may not be able to get something with everything. If it must be waterproof, there's usually a Sony model that ticks all the boxes. I use a small iPhone 5S (I know, that's pretty old, and also you don't w...

damn you, that's my 25mm tyre atm, they are bomb proof indeed (although they really don't like being leaned on in high speed corners) I could ride my road bike and save 3kg and suffer the 37.7k of suggested route...rather than suffer the draggy 260km of wrong tyres...hmm, will probably decide next ...

Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike

25mm Michelin Pro4 Endurance — that's what I have for road, and I'm not riding 400km on a mountain bike. Bear in mind that there's only about 25km of gravel on the 400 by the routesheet (the GPX goes a different route with about another 4km of completely benign track), and so won't make a lot of dif...

Roll the DJ and dress shirt. Keeps creases to a min so you don't have to take a travel iron. Now where’s that photo of Matt and Taylor from the winter Bivvy a few years back..? This one? While I think about it, here's one data point from WRT weekend. For WRT I wore my usual one-day disposables. I put them in on Saturday morning before setting off from home for the four-hour drive over to BBT. I normally wear glasses during the week, as I stare at code most of the day (yawn), so my e...

Re: Spoke issues

Yup, I'm with Scot on that — they're probably all going at the elbow, which suggests they're reaching the limit of fatigue, possibly under-tensioned for your weight. If you're able to lace up your own wheels then a set of spokes is about £20; if not able to build your own then add on £20-30 for some...
