Re: Highland Trail 2019
I just sent in my request, after a pretty easy year last year (only did torino-nice in terms of events).

Re: Gravel bike gearing
On my Arkose, I've got an MTB triple with 24/38 rings, an 11-32 11 speed cassette, and 105 shifters and mechs. Worked fine for loaded riding around the uk, TNR and in a couple of cross races, but may be a little undergeared with road tyres on in fast group rides (but probably fine for most winter ri...

Re: Torino nice who's doing it this yr
I got a MASSIVE e-bike box from the bins at spoc.fr (just past the airport), turned the bars and put the bike in whole. Unpacked it at the carousel and wheeled out through customs!

Re: Torino nice who's doing it this yr
I had a fantastic time - thanks for organising James. I gave myself 8 days which was too generous really - I ended up with some short days at the end and two pretty much full days in Nice. The route was great, the options great to allow people to choose depending on difficulty wanted/time available/...

Re: Torino nice who's doing it this yr
I'm on 40mm 700c Terene Elwood tyres which seem pretty tough and roll ok-ish. I've also managed to fit an mtb triple with two rings (26/38) onto the bike and it is shifting fine with a 105 front mech and 11/32 cassette. So I'll be able to spin up the climbs at least. Maybe.

Re: Torino nice who's doing it this yr
I got a place through the cancellations at the last minute, so I'm definitely winging it. Need to sort out some turin accommodation sunday night! Got to say that the cue sheets/route guides etc. are fantastic, so thanks to James for that :-bd . Hope my downloaded open maps are up to scratch, but oth...

Re: Short travel full sus
Same amount of moving bits and bearings as most 4-bar bikes, including faux bar, vpp etc. although more moving parts than a Scott Spark and Kona HeiHei DL. Well, the old ones didn't have a pivot by the rear axle, they had flexy chainstays, but I take your point re: the new ones (mine were old ones,...

Re: Short travel full sus
What's up with the Spearfish? There's nothing particularly special about the spearfish, but it is an efficient short travel bike with relatively few moving bits. 80mm travel gives you more clearance for a small seatpack than 100mm, or 130mm. I think Pete's anthem looked great - shock layout leaves ...

Re: Short travel full sus
Perfect bike for a lot of races/ITT I think - I did the HT550 on the spearfish, braunton 150, LL200 etc. Save a lot of fatigue and energy I think, but luggage space is tight (small frame bag, seat pack can be a problem) so I quite often carry a rucksack on the sus bike. If it's a real mtb route/some...

Re: Torino nice who's doing it this yr
Pistonbroke - thanks! That's great. My plans are currently pretty......fluid! I've only just confirmed that I'm in so nothing concrete. But plane to Nice, drop bag, train to Turin sounds like a good plan. So, yes, I'm taking the train  I'll have a look at flights this week. Most likely a simila...

piston broke - could I beg a space to shove my bikebag under your van, too?
ZBD - I may be in touch re: travel plans, seeing as we'll both be flying from bristol! Watching the HT550 dots has got me excited for this!

Re: Best way back to Knighton from Dovey on BH Monday
I rode back on the road slowly the day after I did it. It was a nice ride, would've been great on a road bike! It's not at all like doing the TCW twice, it's much, much easier! Although the first climb up the mountain is a good one...

I'm really hoping to do it this year - been signed up for the last two but not yet made it. Doesn't help that my son's 9th birthday is on the 4th... again!

Re: WTD: Dropper Post
I've just bought the external routing brand x - first impressions are that it is pretty good, but no long term experience yet! I've got a KS Lev dx (my favourite) a reverb (not great) and have had a specialized control post (pretty good but only two positions), and used to run a gravity dropper - I'...
