Re: Kentucky / Virginia - do we know owt?

I don't know about TN, but Virginia has a lot of riding options ranging from single track to forest service roads. Bikepacking.com has a few VA routes
listed on their site.

I've used the 2.4 ardent and it is a great tyre. Plus it seems to be easy to get from a variety of sources.

Re: Nights drawing in - happy?

Be real happy when the nights get longer and the days get cooler- I'm near Washington DC and it's been a steamy summer. Setting up a bivy when it is 28 deg C and humid with bugs = no fun. Bring on fall and the cool nights

Re: Words fail me.....

I grew up in Vancouver. We left in 2006, before the hipsters and coffee/bike scene became prevalent. The roads they took to the first camp- flat to rolling. I think a bit too much time was spent doing BMX tricks the first day  Most logging roads only get used on week days. If you go riding on ...

Oregon Outback is dead

http://www.oregonbikepacking.com/the-death-of-the-oregon-outback/ Not that a lot of folks on this forum might have done it, being on the west coast of the US, but interesting to see what happens when an event gets over hyped and common sense/manners go out the window. My wife and I had thought of go...

She did really well last year in an Ultra road race in Alaska. Her first try at road ultra's and I think she came second on a borrowed bike.
She's really understated in her own blog about the racing.

I would look at this web page.

I think Nick did a fair job of covering a lot of the options out there.

Some interesting shots of the Fisherfield river crossing, though in the opposite direction to the way the HTR550 goes
I thought that shot looked like one I had seen before.

A very nice video. Glad I caught it today and could have my break watching it.

Re: (american accent) Do you ride "overland"?

I showed my wife the videos from the Tour Divide route and she looked at it and said "well I could do that!" . She's not a hard core off road rider, more bridleway type of routes or gravel roads. She thought the whole Tour Divide was singletrack.

Re: Which part of the world do you live, and do you like it?

Just in the northern suburbs of Washington DC. The Mrs and I live in a nice area with quiet little roads close by, a mile to a metro stop so if we want to go into DC for supper or such, it's easy to do. A surprising amount of single track only a 20 minute car ride away and if one wanted to (and I'm ...

Re: Are Salsa Anything Cages still made of cheese?

I used the V2 metal ones on a tour in Iceland last summer and they worked fine. Had my kitchen kit on one and the repair kit bag on the other. The weld is much better/longer then the V1 cages if I recall.

I saw a blog post about how a guy bought the pdf of the issue and then had his printing shop print out a copy on really nice paper. I suppose one could do the same thing through any of those copy/shipping shops around the country.

They are given the option/choice to check their coordinates twice a day. I like the no gps option for some events as it does make navigation (a skill) more of a factor as compared to who can program a GPS with the waypoints

I was looking at a photo taken of me when I was touring back in the early 90's with a bum bag with water bottle holders and thought I should look into those again.

Re: 2017 Big Trip to where?

I'd love to go back to Iceland and do the interior routes. You could do it from Rejkjavik up the F35 to Akureyri, restock with food (and coffee) and then go and travel on some of the harder routes (with fords) towards the Icecap. Pop out in the south of the Island and then go do the Landmannalaugar ...

If it's the arctic in the summer, I'm less worried about polar bears and more worried about finding a bivy sack with the best protection from black flies and mosquitoes
