Re: Highland Trail 550 - the book

Not really the experience I want on it. Doing that sort of thing with no-one else around will put me in a "bad place". You should give it a try - I found it quite liberating! I'm worried that if I get to do the group ride I'll find that to be a "bad place" if I can't live with t...

Re: HT550 - 2017

No Tom, no Javi    but a fired up Fitz and a fired up Stuart :-S Surprised you've taken the time to notice for a race you have so little interest in  This time last year I was all fired up for doing it until Alan didn't give me a start. But it meant I got to do an ITT the week ...

Fords of Avon is very very small. Had a look in on my way past during CL last year and woke a couple of guys up  - if I'd wanted to stay it would have been snug!

Re: Deeside Trail

In serious negotiations at home to get the pass out for the group start :-bd So I was looking at the gpx route on MemoryMap and there are quite a few places where the route does "unexpected" things and diverts off the very obvious track/path. I know I'm going to get called a pedant - but k...

Re: HT550 2016 ITT starters

I see he has a blog so hopefully he'll have a good write up coming soon. Must have been gutting to get to Carnmore after that epic day and have to sleep outside. It is scuzzy but when I got there last year It was like a palace! Bloody good effort, looking forward to spot watching Howard and Alastai...

Alasdair - I'm not liking the weather forecast for the weekend I'm off to do the CL this weekend......in rain gear it seems. Have fun, but just be careful of this wee rock step along Glen Feshie if the burns are high.... the "path" is by the pink bits of rock.. https://farm8.staticflickr....

Re: HT550 2016 ITT starters

I personally think the answer is slightly more complicated. Approach the river at the mouth of the loch, attempt to cross, double back, cross somewhere else, and then ride down to the other side of where you should have crossed and continue from there. This then gets very close to the "you mus...

He's at the climb I did with my wife last August also by torchlight after a very long day walking in the hills. We got back to our tent at about 11:30pm. I'd quite like to see that bit in daylight this time! One thing's for sure - he's going a lot, lot faster than I'll manage

Re: HT550 2016 ITT starters

No movement from Huw's SPOT for a while. Even though I've never met him, he's a like minded spirit out on the trail and it's given me an inkling of what my wife must start to think when my SPOT doesn't move..... Finger's crossed.

Re: HT550 2016 ITT starters

Just did the 1st 70 miles then a 30 mile road scoot to Ft Bill to do the last 45 miles this weekend. Cracking weather all weekend. Blog post to come, but here is a pic of how rubbish it was. Sounds like your knee has recovered from the CL? That's good. :-bd Thanks to all for the info about Oykel Br...

Re: Cairngorm loop grp depart 2016

Well done Howard, must be the hardest traverse of the route - even harder than Aiden Hardings ride in 2012! Thanks - but I don't think they really compare. Getting round the whole route in under 24 hours is vaguely exciting - his average speed wasn't much less than mine on La Marmotte; on a road bi...

Re: Cairngorm loop grp depart 2016

Just one thing. What do you think happened to your etrex? It was an Edge 800 and I don't know. It exhibited various different behaviours while it was dying before settling on just going blank at the point it reached loading maps. Spent 45 minutes on the phone with Garmin support and they talked me ...

Re: HT550 2016 ITT starters

Have you sorted your transport plans etc? I've got two spare train tickets from Glasgow to Tyndrum on Friday at 12:15ish due to two mates having to pull out, and you're welcome to a space in my hiker hut in Tyndrum (as dodgy as that sounds). My aim is to leave very early on Saturday to hit Fort Aug...

Aww - thanks . HT is 3 times longer than CL though - Not sure I'd have been up for the equivalent of two more laps of the CL!

Good luck with that. Chances are you won't encounter anyone in Kinlochleven given that the route no longer goes that way... Edit: I'm starting the Saturday prior, but I'm undecided whether to ride the full route, the 430, or something completely different. Alasdair, I am thinking of starting Saturd...

Re: Cairngorm loop grp depart 2016

hmmm - still umming and ahhing about whether to do this starting on Saturday. Forecast looks very good this weekend - the wind is dropping and temps rising - but that brings the risk of substantial thaw and high rivers. I'm pretty familiar with most of the route having lived up there for 10 years b...

What a lot of posts to catch up on! That was quite hard - mostly because of the headwind that seemed to be my constant companion!
