Re: PBP - anyone planning on entering?
Rough plan is ride 600km to Brest and sleep for a bit Monday night, then do whatever the body will allow to get back to Rambouillet for Wednesday night. Ideally in about 72hours but I won't be upset if it takes longer Screenshot_20230812-162622.png I had the same plan in 2019 starting at 1630, but ...

K120 on the tracking page, 1830 start. Came in around 78 hours on my last two rides; not expecting to go faster this year.

Re: PBP - anyone planning on entering?
No, not particularly well prepared, but I'm just about fit enough, the bike setup is well tested previously and I've got some experience so won't be wasting calories on worrying.
I'll be reet, might even enjoy myself.

Re: Audax Tips?
That's too much food for a 115 km ride for me, taking into account you'll stop for cake at a control at least once and ride past a Spar every 20 km, but YMMV. Your bike will be fine; you could ride a full susser on 3" tyres and not come last on a 100 km audax. Tips? Even if you're an experience...

Re: Ritchey Outback v2 breakaway frame medium
Hi Tom Sorry, I'm not going to buy your frame! I already have a frame that splits that I use as a travel-gravel bike. :-bd What I am interested in is whether you have flown with the Ritchey case? I've always coveted an S&S soft case but been worried about the tight dimensions; the Ritchey one lo...

Re: Waterproof Jacket Recommendations
I bought a Outdry 'Titanium' that is the first one I've found that's a closer fit. However, it only fits like that because I had a successful punt on a medium women's version for £60 new off ebay, knowing the men's medium would be tent-like.

Re: OT: Car Hire
Insurance is about your own personal risk appetite. If you don't hit anything it' wasn't worth paying for... I hire loads of cars with work from Glasgow airport (company insurance), usually from the big providers like Enterprise, Avis, Hertz etc., and it's generally painless. If you haven't hired a ...

I'm further south in Dorset but agree with the above comments and I'll add that everyone bashing through the undergrowth on a ride on Sunday were pulling ticks off themselves afterwards, so take your tweezers with you.

Re: Cheap OS topo maps on a Garmin with no microSD card slot?
Yes, I've got those maps and successfully put the file onto the Garmin internal storage and have OS mapping on my 530.
My eyes are obviously in good condition because despite the small screen I find OS maps on the 530 to be a big improvement over the standard Garmin maps or open source maps.

Maybe not the Cambiums, but the old adage about improving Brooks saddle comfort was to put it in the tumble dryer with a rock, then throw away the saddle and use the rock.

Re: PBP - anyone planning on entering?
Out of interest, and same question for the others planning on the PBP: what saddle are you lot riding (on the bike/bikes you're doing most of your qualifiers on and definitely on the big day/days of the PBP)? 16 years ago: Brooks. 12 Years ago: Specialized Toupe. 4 years ago: ISM Adamo which I stil...

I use a small hand sanitiser bottle with flip lid which holds 30ml - enough for a sunny weekend in Wales.

Re: Fast Tyres
I've used 2.2 Ikons for years, since they were still considered an MTB tyres size. Great for every terrain you want to go fast on, and not so great in conditions you should have stayed at home in.
They are probably considered gravel tyre nowadays.

Re: PBP - anyone planning on entering?
600 completed in unbelievable-for-Wales scorchio weather this weekend. 400 is on the results list as 'provisional' so that's the qualifiers done. Will now spend the next three months riding other bikes for fun instead of audaxing, lose half my fitness and I'm ready for Paris. :-bd Edit to add: Still...

] No doubt for what they do they're unsurpassed. But they are pricey and they don't have replaceable batteries, which may be a factor if on a long ride without an opportunity to recharge. The exposure lights come with a usb charge cable so I can charge it from a power bank mid-ride, possibly even w...

Re: All night lights
Or like many on here spend £300+ on Exposure lights. Mine were less than that (Strada 600) but I can't rely on the output hours on the display, no bearing to real time or battery drain rate at all.. It's a kind of tension-inducing guesswork... My Mk6 Strada filled with rainwater for the final time ...

Re: All night lights
If those lights you have mentioned have a low setting that is about 400 lumens then that's what you want for climbing and flat riding sub-10mph. Find out the run times in this low setting, probably the kind of time you need. For descents either use the higher settings and manage your run times accor...

Nice, satisfying project! How far is your commute?
(Personally, if "riding to the shops, the pub, etc" I couldn't countenance all that work, especially painting the frameset, to make it special/mine only to risk it locked outside in public.)
