Re: Best Tour du Mont Blanc route?

Thanks Gian. The CdS to Grenoble was what we originally had planned to do on this trip before it morphed into the TMB, so plan B is actually plan A!

It looks like a great four day trip and it never goes above 1500m so should be completely snow free.

Re: Best Tour du Mont Blanc route?

Good news that you enjoyed the Col du Bonhomme going clockwise. You Lakes boys are a bit handy at the technical stuff though! I would prefer to go that way to stay closer to the proper route and I've been the Lac Roseland way before. However I have just discovered from someone who was there last wee...

Re: Best Tour du Mont Blanc route?

Thanks James. From your description it sounds like you went anti-clockwise. Would it work clockwise? I don't mind a bit of uphill hike-a-bike but want to avoid extended downhill carrying.

Best Tour du Mont Blanc route?

In ten days time I'll be setting out on a Tour du Mont Blanc with some friends. We are definitely going clockwise from Chamonix and taking four days. Is there a "Goldilocks" route that has neither too much road nor too much hike-a-bike?! At present we are planning on this: https://ridewith...

Re: HT550 2016 ITT starters

The tricky gate is not even on the route. It's 50m down the hill from the easy gate. Hold the line!

Will Howard "carry on camping" or go to Camban? I suspect he'll press on past and camp.

Re: 2016 Highland Trail (group start)

I sent out the final details to the group start riders this morning. If you haven't seen it, check your Junk folder.

I wouldn't dream of not taking a headnet! Are you mad Gian?

Re: Lakeland 200

While everyone was getting excited about it's new baby brother, someone completed the Lakeland 200 on Sunday. Justin Atkinson made use of the near perfect conditions to do a very fast time of 19hrs 9mins. His prize is a place on the HT group start in 2017. Last year saw no "official" compl...

Re: HT550 2016 ITT starters

Lochinver to the road before Ledmore Junction is 20km. To the bothy it is 90% rideable, after the bothy 90% unrideable. Anything under 4 hours for this section is good going.

He was just toying with us! He's just been up the newly refurbished trail at the start of the Coffin Road. No more fighting your way through gorse bushes. Still not much riding though!

Re: 2016 Highland Trail route.

I have sent out the final GPX track today. If you are in the group start or on my list of potential ITTers then you should have received it. Anyone else that wants it can contact me via my email address on the Highland Trail website. There are only minor changes from the last version so Ian's maps (...

Re: How many days advice

If you mean via the Highand Trail route then it's 92 miles and one big day out. If you're doing it more leisurely it should be easy enough over two days. I'd go south, there's a great singletrack descent into Fort Augustus and a fantastic hike-a-bike up into Glen Affric! I think a lot of that would ...

Easter is not until mid-April next year. It'll be bone dry by then!
Is a summer ITT completion valid for inclusion in the results if started from Minehead? Most people live nearer that end.

Javi is still going after a night out with Katie! He's over the heavy South Common section and heading towards the "best cafe in North Devon". I wonder if he knows/cares?!

Re: Braunton 150

I hope you've got gears Javi! Quite tough that, even before the grim weather this afternoon. A great route if you don't mind a bit of climbing. I think the first back was home in just under 27 hours. I made it round in just over 31 hours but was getting seriously chilly with about 25km to go. Pretty...

Re: 2016 Highland Trail route.

Doesn't the climb up by the Easan Dorcha and descent to Achnashellach count as Torridon?
Torridon lite maybe but some superb singletrack (up and down) and less hike-a-bike. A nice wee bothy too.
If anyone else didn't get the HT2016_V2 gpx track let me know and I'll send it to you.

Re: 2016 Highland Trail route.

In previous years people flying into Glasgow airport have stayed a night at the Holiday Inn (Express?) and left bike boxes with them. I've given a few riders a lift from there. Once in Tyndrum they've mostly stayed at the Tyndrum Inn. I can give up to two people a lift from Glasgow airport if you wi...

Back in my day there was a short section we called "Dog Alley" as you turned off the 111 at Vallecitos in New Mexico. The second time I went through there I was ready with my pepper spray!
They use big dogs to guard sheep in some places, if in doubt, take a wide berth around the flock.

Just to be clear, the lodge mentioned above is not an hotel! It's Gobernuisgach hunting lodge, a couple of folks camped in the lee of some buildings there last year with permission.

Re: Bang for buck... What's the best bikepacking route?

Remember that the Highland Trail is three loops. If you want bang for your buck the middle loop would be very good value. It's 400km though so you'd need to be fit to do it in four days. The new southern loop may be a better option at 270km with the option of catching the overnight sleeper to Fort W...

Re: Cairngorm loop grp depart 2016

I don't remember a bridge over the Allt Garbhlach on the Cairngorms Loop, I think that crosses it further upstream where the route goes a bit "off-piste"!
Further up Glen Feshie I'd imagine the track through the landslip area and the riverside singletrack just after will be gone by now.

Kurt Searvogel has broken the record for most miles ridden in a year, 75117 as of yesterday with five days to go to add to that.
Sorry if there is another thread for this but i couldn't see one. Hopefully Dave will add some detail.
