Re: Trossachs daughter/dad ride and camp
Just great this. Well done you both. I've tried to encourage any of my 3 girls to come along and none of them interested. The wild weeing and poos put them off, even though I've promised them toilet stops. Still hoping one might change their mind. One of my 18 yr olds, who is into birdwatching, mig...

Trossachs daughter/dad ride and camp
Kicked off the father/daughter bikepacking '24 season at the weekend with E wanting to go somewhere that she could toast marshmallows. We decided to see what the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park camp site was like at Loch Chon. Although I'm not keen on campfires, the site provides a fire ...

Re: Wanted - an old down or synthetic jacket for making down booties.
I've made a pair of goretex camp slippers using the template from:
https://andersj.se/lagersko-nr-1-lag-modell/
I'm going to make a mk2 version to be more of a bootie style and include a removeable synthetic inner that i can wear in my sleeping bag.

Re: Badger Divide - Parking Glasgow?
You can park in the West End at North Kelvinside. It's the area around Kelvinside Academy - Kirklee Road/ Bellshaugh Road, plenty of parking and no payment/restrictions. It's also close to the finish at Kelvingrove museum. Alternatively, you can park in Milngavie, on Main Street, B8030 opposite the ...

Re: Ideas for old self inflating sleeping mat?
Thanks all. Some good ideas to try out.
I'm tempted to try a repair, i've not got much to lose.
I do like the idea of a padded malt bottle holder. Might get my sketch pad and pencil out on my days off and see what i can come up with.

Ideas for old self inflating sleeping mat?
Hi, I'm looking for MYOG ideas on what to do with an old Alpkit Airo self inflating sleeping mat. a part of it has delaminated on both sides and a bubble of outer material inflates and i suspect that is where the air is slowly escaping from. Did think of slicing it and gluing it but it's a 4-5"...

Re: Advice on lowering gearing on a kids bike
That's an option, but i think i'd need to change the deraileur and possibly the shifter. I'll do a bit more research on that.johnnystorm wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 10:48 pm Microshift Acolyte 8 speed 12-42 cassettes are a tenner on CRC.

Re: Advice on lowering gearing on a kids bike
Hi Ton,
It is a square taper. Do you know the length of the crank? It's to fit a 24 inch wheel bike for an 8yr old.

Advice on lowering gearing on a kids bike
Hi, I've got the wee one a Frog 62 bike. Only problem is that it osn't geared low enough for some hills we go up. The chainring is 32T and the cassette is 11T-32T. I initially thought of swapping out the chainring for a 28 or a 30T which would've lowered all the gears, however, having disassembled t...

My Tu'pence worth: I'm an InReach mini user. Mainly used for hillwalking/mountaineering and i've been working towards my Winter Mountain Leader so been going out solo a lot on the hills recently. I got it mainly due to my experience in protracted Mountain Rescue searches. I use the basic Garmin Emer...

Re: Alternative to Bob
I'm in a similar position in terms of age of 1st child and bike packing kit carrying capacity. We've had a few adventures but as she grows bigger it's more difficult to carry everything. She usually has an Alpkit tapered Airlok bag under her saddle which is jammed with some spare clothes and small l...

Re: Bikepacking with Kids.
I'd love to go and watch/listen but i'm no where near Hathersage.
My daughter wants to go further than her 40 mile 2 dayer that we did last year. I've got my route thinking hat on at the mo.

Re: Cargo trailer info required
Some of the burley trailers allow you to take the seats out and use it as a cargo trailer. Unfortunately the current Burley trailer is moving on to the brother in law early next year. It is a huge space to get stuff in. Had to pick the kids up from the in-laws a few days ago and i chicked my daught...

Re: Cargo trailer info required
Bikepacking.com did a piece on cargo trailers. Might be worth a read. Can’t remember how long ago it was but should be easy to search for. I read that piece the other night at work. Quite informative. Essentially, as i want to use a single wheel trailer on a thru axle and a QR i need to buy a trail...

Re: Cargo trailer info required
I've seen the BOB yak trailers. Look good but on the pricey side for my budget and not many coming up 2nd hand, and if they are, they're the 26" version and i'd then have to fork out for the larger yoke to fit 27.5+. Some goods deals on the Topeak journey trailer at the mo. But again would need...

Cargo trailer info required
Hi, Looking for info and reccomendations on cargo trailers. Next year i'm initially planning some family cycling trips, probably staying mainly in Youth Hostels etc. As my son gets a bit older i can see him joining my daughter and I on our bikepacking adventures but i think my current bikepacking ki...

Nice little ride that, must get one of the bear cubs out for summat similar... Athough there's a lot of planning in our trips to keep my wee one motivated, it's well worth it. I just need to work out what to do when my wee boy who is 2 years old wants to join us... my wife, unfortunately, is not ke...

Re: Dumbartonshire loop overnighter
Good trip :-bd That cafe at Edenmill is a good find. I've been eyeing up the JMW as another way west from my gaff, via the Kincardine bridge, so will give that a whirl sometime The cafe is great and well worth popping in even for just a coffee. There's also a great butchers there as well. I've been...

Big compliments to your young 'un for that 40-miler. It's always uplifting to see someone of that age having a brill time on a bike. And compliments to dad for showing her she could do it. Puts some of us old farts to shame :-bd . Have a look at some of Borderer's and Richpips's and others posts fo...

Dumbartonshire loop overnighter
Inspired by the East Lothian trail and my daughter wanting to continue our bikepacking adventures, I set out to see if there was a 40mile(ish) loop on our door step in Glasgow. There was a lot to consider in keeping an almost 7 year old motivated - where to stay, eating stops, play parks and also wh...
