Re: The SR/SR series, 2017

Sorry James, forgot to say great effort by the way!!! I'm going to do a write up in English, but currently struggling with the french version! I took my Uncle John in the end....it wasn't the plan: I planned to take my custom size carbon road bike, only the 25mm tyres I bought whilst stuck in Mali i...

Re: (some of the) Veneto Gravel trail

Hey Gairy, Missed you on the Chilkoot Safari down on the coast! I'd be interested in seeing the route. We toured down the adige valley from the austrian boorder last summer. Made it to Verona then headed back via. lake Garda. We were supposed to go to Venice, but changed our minds at Verona due to l...

Re: 1000 miles in France

Cracking trip! Good for you 2. We've done the Bassin d'archachon down to Biarritz with our 2, 3 1/2 years ago. I'm glad to know now that we made the right choice stopping where we did! We've toured with our 2 since the first was 1 1/2. We've done 2 trips to Denmark: and they've both been our best tr...

Re: Chilkoot Safari: Gravel Rally. S France. March.

Price includes the evening meal. Kit is transported for you so not a bikepacking event per. se. So hope I haven't broken some forum rule or offended anyone. Happy to help with any translation if required.

Chilkoot Safari: Gravel Rally. S France. March.

Hi all, I thought some of you might be interested in this: http://chilkoot-cdp.com/project/chilkoot-safari/ . I know Gairy M has signed up. Basically I think it is 2 days of mostly gravel on a set course with certain timed stages and a communal bivvy-out and evening meal in restaurant etc. It's down...

Re: CX/gravel drivetrain query

I thought a 10 speed shimano road shifter shifting a chain on a 10 speed shimano mtb casette will work as long as you use a 9 speed shimano mtb rear mech? That's what i came up with after some research before our little alpine jolly for my Uncle John. However if someone tells me this is nonsense, it...

Re: Bikepacking problem

It's just a game. Back in the 70's or early 80's, Ken Wilson (RIP) published an essay (at least I think that's how it started as it ended up into a series of collections of short stories: I can't be bothered to hobble over to the bookshelf on my crutches) called 'The Games Climbers Play'. It looked ...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

So….just found out I rode 550km with around 18000m of climbing…with….a fractured femur! Bit shocked to find out. Happened as many of you will know on Day 1 coming out of Turin when I had an altercation with a post on a cycle lane. Got home. Went to the doctors, she wanted me to have a scan and x-ray...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

We got into Nice yesterday morning. From Sampeyere village Béné and I rode with Rob, then we met John and Scattamah at the Col de Tende cafe. Sadly leaving the route (due to time constraints), and Scattamah at the main road junction to head up to the col de Turini, we headed up and over a road col t...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Makes me feel justified in spending some money to change my Uncle John gearing from having a lowest of 33:30 to 33:36. Done plenty of road col climbing (live near Grenoble), but admittedly not loaded. It was only when looking at the pictures of the Paris Chill team that I suddenly thought, 'oh, hang...

'Gurning' with a 24:36? Eh? You do mean 24 at the front? .............Have I missed the bit where we were told we're doing a north face alpine mountaineering route?

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Weather wise: Well near Grenoble it's been unbearably hot for the last week. High 30's near us at 600m altitude, i.e. as hot as it gets for us. Hot weather like this is normally followed by stormy periods..... however I have been told this week it will be stormy and then getting good again. So it co...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Cheers, I had a play with that earlier and couldn't get it to upload a gpx file....it seems I did something to it as bikehike now works nicely... Shame I've just gone through each gpx file and put them back into gpsvisualiser to get a profile! We live and learn! No idea why basecamp is not playing b...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Hello all, Béné and I are massively looking forward to this. Thanks James! Think the bikes are almost sorted.... Train to Turin booked (we live near Grenoble if we can be of any help to anyone), hostel booked etc. Can anyone see elevation graphs of the gpx files in Basecamp? I'm just getting ' The c...
