what are these badges to which people refer? These are highly coveted, especially the black versions which require a completion in less than 24 hours. spiced fruit muffins from Sainsbury cheese teacakes (sounds odd, very tasty) cheese and tomato rolls (use chilli oil rather than spread) various granola bars (the fresh ones from the bakery section) probably have rocket fuel in the water bottles (Hi5 energy /caffeine powder mix) just water in my cam...

for road bike I have a garmin edge 1000, not that impressed
for hiking I have a garmin montana 610
it's a chunky thing, but has been very reliable.

I wouldn't put too much store in what others are taking, some will be riding straight through so any kit will be minimal and just enough to cover emergencies, others like comfort, some can deal with the cold or damp well, others can't.
