Re: Charities & Worthy Causes

Yes, if you pay someone £200k, and they bring in £2m more sponsorship than someone paid £100k, it would be good value for money. It is a lot of money though! Sort of, but who's money? an extra 100k of donations going into the pocket of some Charity Exec is not really right, IMO. If I donate, I'd li...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

How did everyone get on with their bike choice? Any regrets? Whyte 529 hardtail with 2.2 tyres. Regrets? No. I think that unless you were riding a completely unsuitable bike, maybe an Boris Bike or a narrow barred, high geared fixed wheel you shouldn't be regretting your bike choice. There were def...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Mrs. CT and me landed at Cafe du Cyclist yesterday afternoon. Fell off the route at the top of col de Braus due to no water or food and the Buvette was closed/a storm was coming.

More when I get back on British soil but we had a fantastic time.

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

I remember riding fully loaded touring and part of it is coming to terms of the cost of carrying the kit in terms of pace and exertion. Climbing big hard hills just meant being resigned to a slower pace and once I'd got there I was a lot happier on hills and into a headwind. Mind you, if I was reall...

Sometimes, for the first time out on a new kind of tyre I'll put them up to the max to see what they feel like. Then I'll regret my life choices and drop the pressure to something less silly.

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Feeling like I'm going to be horribly overpacked in comparison. On the other hand, I reckon I'm going to use everything I'm bringing and moot my slightly soft comfort requirements so I can't see me ditching anything.

Wait, no...

I mean I'll be tacking those climbs like nobody's business.

Sorry

Ah c'mon, I'm a larger proportioned rider and I won't be doing much walking. If anything I'll be attacking those climbs like nobody's business.

Re: Those new Surly handlebars.

I get the whole multi hand positions but having that "hood effect" that far forward of the clamping position seems like it's going to lead to some inevitable slippage. It'll be funny to watch I guess.

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Might fit the down jacket in if I can find a bit of space but mostly I'll be camping lower down so hopefully won't find myself short on appropriate clothing. There will be a selection of other appropiate layers. Mainly concerned about any long descents into headwinds for getting cold. Alas with disc...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Back when we cycled across Canada, we had out sub zero night in the rockies and then realised we wouldn't need our fleecy stuff for the rest of the trip so bundled them up with a few other extraneous bits and posted them home. Always a handy reminder that you don't have to keep carrying it with you.

The lass is trying to qualify for the Euro Tri Champs so we're off to Worthing. Puts a bit of a crimp on my bivvy plans but taking the MTB for bouncing around a bit of the South Downs Way. It'll be wet and slippy on Saturday so hoping it'll be dry and quiet on Monday. If it's too busy I might see if...

I'm a little uncertain as to what to iron my patch on to. I'd quite like it to be on the Apidura saddlebag but don't want to knacker the fabric.

Thanks James,

We've plumped for the airport. Not a lot of hassle for the balance of security and cost. Train goes pretty much direct to our hotel too.

Re: How far would you go?

It varies really. For just a ride, I'll try to avoid getting in the car at all. Trains are a different matter as they can be spent sleeping, eating, reading etc so it doesn't feel like lost time. For an event, i.e. something organised, I'll try to avoid any more than two hours drive for any less tha...

I though "dark side" referred to recumbents? Now there is a group of riders that can wobble a lot at low speeds.

Re: Would roadies wobble less ...

No, like all other types of rider, roadies have a contingent who are simply incapable of not wobbling no matter what gear/incline combination they are on. I'm not sure what is the cause of the higher prevalence of wobbling is among roadies but until I hear otherwise I'm mostly inclined to blame tria...

Re: Off topic: A BearBones lifestyle and minimalism.

When I'm selling things that have inherent value to me, I try to think of how much value I've gotten out of using the item and deduct that from what it's original cost. Usually that puts it below market value and makes for a quick sale.

I routinely get rid of worn out and redundant things like clothes, shoes etc. I also try to avoid buying those sorts of things for the sake of it. Alas, I do like owning certain things that I would find it hard to declutter from. Books (especially my collection of graphic novels), a well equipped ki...

Ha ha, the person who got me into using SPDs had just moved over to SPD sandals and had ditched the outer chainring on triple because he never really went that fast. I reckon he'd be chuffed to be considered a roadie.
