Re: HT550 - 2017

Just had a catch up on positions. Wondering if the front few riders might be angling for a late visit to Contin stores and use of the campsite for a couple of hours sleep. Could be a good move as its right on the road so no need for dicking about with finding a bivviable spot in the dark.

Re: wanted: your old touring/gravel/mbt bike

I have an old Kona Hahanna which you can have for £100 plus postage which will probably be about £30-40. Has braze ons for a rack. Currently it is on V brakes but has mounts for discs and the wheels are disc read and haven't been used that much. Needs a little care and attention but your budget shou...

They do but only during weekday office hours making things a bit tricky for those of use who spend weekdays working in an office. Can't really expect them to work when I don't but it would be nice to go and fondle any potential new toys.

Re: 'No night riding' rules?

Is it the case that night riding is predominately a UK thing and thus something Europeans may think to exclude? Certainly not from an audax perspective where we're considered a bit on the soft side for running almost all our 200k rides during daytime. Although we do get some credit for liking our a...

Re: The further commercialisation of bikepacking?

My concern was not so much on the liability of event participants towards other parties (although that is very valid given the fatigued state many will be in on a long event - insurance probably won't cover if your actions are unreasonable / contrary to Highway Code, etc), but for the organisers th...

Re: The further commercialisation of bikepacking?

Yeah, eyelids definitely get batted for the 3 peaks. This is despite the vast amount of work that was, and occasionally still is, put in by John Rawnsley. Apparently the land use meetings can still be pretty fraught even though it's been the same people for many years. There are a handful of cycle r...

Re: The further commercialisation of bikepacking?

if organisers have to start thinking about liability insurance, access authority, risk assessments, safety mitigations, and all the other crap that goes into some more public events (sportives, etc) then stand-by for big price hikes or less inclination to host such events. I suppose it depends on w...

Re: Golf....help please

I don't think the golfers would be much to be worried about or groundsmen before 7am. However, that looks like exactly the sort of route that would be the 5am dog walker's paradise. More likely to get harassed by an uppity border collie and have it's owner call the police to report the local kids ar...

Just seen that and much more than the book, this is what worries me. The sort of idiots who's behaviour would get a bothy closed are far more likely to read a clickbait article than go into a bookshop and read an actual physical book. If anything, what I've hear about the book, including description...

Re: R.A.P.H.A. travel. If you thought the clothing was price

That was roughly the budget for two of us to cycle across Canada. OK, I'll admit that occasionally the food was a tad short of "cuisine" standard and there was that week of headwind and rain when the prospect of another night under canvas wasn't thrilling me. But I'd definitely rather do t...

Knowing is no good if they haven't got definitive evidence. Always worth getting something put up locally encouraging any trail users to a) report anything they see to the police (don't touch anything to and protect it as evidence as possible) b) write to their local councillor demanding action c) w...

Stu: our club organises a sportive each year in the Yorkshire Dales and for the last three years I've been sweeper - sum total of five items over the three years that I could definitely associate with the event. I've spoken to event organisers for sportives and triathlons. One of the reasons they g...

2016 Genesis bikes have 30% off according to the thing that popped up in my Farcebook. Might have accidentally just bought another bike, anyone have any tips on how to get it past the Mrs? Bit uncertain for me as I'm getting into my running at the moment and want to keep that ticking over instead of falling off like it did this year. Church porches are more favoured by audaxers than bus stops. Bus stops just tend to be a bit more frequent than churches. I had a fantastic time on the TNR so I'm in for this one along with Mrs Tiger. Looking forward to the glorious weather, high mountain passes and the ready supply of fine coffee a...

Re: off topic: anyone here into trail running?

Another runner here. Fell and trail running for preference but I do some road running close to home. I find it's kind of handy because it's less kit intensive than running so if you're having a busy day then half an hour running can be as physically rewarding as two hours on the bike. Also good if t...

Re: OoooOooh North Cape 4000 . . . .

I didn't come across any gravel roads in lower Sweden while riding the Super Brevet Scandinavia and I know the Sverigetempot is on fully tarmaced roads. The only bit of gravel road we went down was in Denmark but it was avoidable. This does look pretty tempting though, even if it is a fully road ride.

There were a fair few flared bars out there on Sunday albeit mostly towards the rear of the field. I suspect that as long as you aren't troubling the top 100 minor infractions of the rules around bikes will attract too much attention. It usually only becomes an issue if you start annoying people by ...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Couple of thoughts. I'll preface this by saying that the route was fantastic and we had an amazing time out there. No regrets whatsoever. If there were any low moments, they were solely because of us as riders and in no way a failing of the route. However, I still think it was just a little bit col ...
