Re: The Welsh Lakes

There's some decent riding between them and some less so  Where would you plan on starting from? I assume a loop? How many miles a day? I'd probably start from Brenig and loop back around. Distance is less important, happy to ride anything up to about 40-50 miles per day, but I'm very happy t...

Re: Packing Tents

I guess it depends how heavy your tent is, how much weight you've already got on the bars and the type of riding you'd be doing. I wouldn't want the extra 1.5 kilos that my wet tent would add on my bars if I'm expecting any kind of technical terrain. Fair point, I don't really ride anything "t...

Re: GPX Sharing

I'd love any knowledge, tips, advice, GPX files for North Wales, especially the Denbigh / St Asaph / Holywell areas if anyone has anything.

Thanks

Re: GPX Sharing

There's also lots of things shown on the map that aren't on the ground  I'm a great believer that anything worth having doesn't come easy, use your maps and a spirit of adventure to amass your own local knowledge. It's not a fast process and at times there'll be some real dead-ends but the re...

Re: GPX Sharing

Not frowned upon at all. However, I don't really understand what you mean when you say the OS maps are only useful to a point ... they're the most useful route planning tool there is. You should be able to work out a route with them quite easily then convert it via bikehike or similar into gpx form...

The Welsh Lakes

Has any one ridden a tour of the lakes in North Wales? I was hoping to do a three to four day trip in the summer, probably something like: * Day 1 - Llyn Brenig / Llyn Alwen * Day 2 - Llyn Bala * Day 3 - Trawsfynydd * Day 4 - Either Llyn Padarn, or Llyn Crafnant / Llyn Geirionydd Any one have experi...

Re: GPX Sharing

I mainly use strava for discovering new trails. The different ways I do this are: 1- Use the activity search and find rides other people have done starting near me and a specific length. 2- Use the segment explore and find a segment in the area I want to go to. Then look through all the people who ...

GPX Sharing

is sharing GPX files frowned upon here? I only ask as I'd like to get in to more off road riding, but it seems a lot of trails are simply found by exploring / local knowledge. I have Adventure and Explorer maps of my local area, but they're only useful to a point. I'd love to be able to see routes l...

Re: Packing Tents

The reason for this question is simply that for my road bike set up. I've got it sorted, my dry gear goes in Panniers and the tent outer goes on a rack in it's own bag. For my MTB setup however, I'd basically got two attachment points available, Handlebar bag, or Seatpack. I'm thinking the most effe...

Packing Tents

For those of you that use tents, can I just ask how you go about packing them? Do you keep the inner and outer separate? Do they (or it) go in the seat pack? Do you have any worries about the tent outer getting everything else in the pack damp? Am I missing something obvious? Am I worrying unnecessa...

Re: Sleeping bag upgrade

The pack size of the 20 was a bit on the large side, the 35 was exactly the same as the cosmos 300 and eurohike 500 down bags.

Re: Sleeping bag upgrade

Went to blacks to check out the Eurohike 500 for £75. It seemed very thin and the staff keep the bags in compression sacks, which put me off. I did end up grabbing the last of their mountain hardwear lamina 35s for £65 though. Very, very impressed with it so far. Packs as small as the Eurohike and c...

Re: The post man's been ...

My new bottle cages and bottles have arrived for my experiment with lead weighting... Now I just need some lead shot! I'm thinking that I'm probably going to need to velcro the bottles in place though as whilst I bought the sturdiest cages I could find, they still don't seem that sturdy. You anywhe...

Cheers for all the info folks. Back country navigator looks really nice, just playing with demo mode now. I've often been curious about the difference in power usage between a phone and a dedicated GPS unit. Do phones hammer the batteries simply because of the higher res screens and other signals it...

Re: Intentional Weight Handicap... Suggestions?

To be honest, on a bike, I really don't know. When diving shot belts were used to avoid back pain caused by block belts, but that's in a horizontal profile and floating. I guess you'd be best trying with a small amount of weight and building it up? Either way, it's just a suggestion. Pinch of salt n...

Re: Intentional Weight Handicap... Suggestions?

If you genuinely want to weigh yourself down in a big way, take a look at SCUBA diving shot belts. I may actually have one I can send to you if I can find it. Basically it's a big wide belt with a series of small sealed pockets on the back, you slide a tube or bit of pipe in through a folded flap an...

Re: Navigating

If I was looking at picking up a new GPS unit for my bike what would you recommend? I've seen a few Garmins but they seem more like serious "training" computers. I'm not arsed about how many calories I used etc, what I need is something that I can upload a route to, which will then shout a...

On Monday I had a great explore of the vast Llanberis quarry. Starting from the top I wormed my way down all the levels checking out the remnants of days gone by. Very atmospheric!! http://i403.photobucket.com/albums/pp117/summittoppler/Llanberis%20Quarry%204-5-15/20150504_103345.jpg And a video if...
