Re: anyone experienced/owning the new Garmin solar units?

It's downloading of maps that used to get me (and my brain). But for road I guess I'm good and maybe just use the Wahoo for the off roading rudes... Pretty easy on the 530/540 as you just plug the unit into your computer and drag and drop the file over. There is a restriction (at least on the 530) ...

Re: HT550 - 2024

Pace seems generally high - lots of people have cleared the northern loop whereas previously you see the most traffic about now. Looks like Alex did stop for 3hrs at Shenevall bothy, but even with that he took just 10 1/2 hours from Inverbroom to Poolewe! Took me 8 1/2 none stop :???: Anyone know w...

Re: anyone experienced/owning the new Garmin solar units?

Cath got the 540 recently after her ten(?) year old 800 decided it wasn't really wanting to play anymore. Seems to have pretty good battery life.

Re: HT550 - 2024

Imight be wrong but I don't think the Drumbeg stores did the dot watching, open early/late until 2016 or 2017 but definitely a comfort if you aren't quite going to get there by the usual closing time. Yeah I know it wasn't the case in early days, so is a bonus now. What's the welcome like at OBH no...

Re: HT550 - 2024

You'd have to look on the Highland Trail website Shaf but I think the only required kit are helmet and SPOT - nothing required, nothing forbidden. Most ITTs follow the standard set of rules but some, like the TDR, deviate slightly. The TDR lets riders use motorised transport away fro and back to the...

Re: HT550 - 2024

Just catching up. Alex M did the northern bit in 3 1/2 hours after going all through the night so that's pretty good going. I suspect he'll stop tonight for a bit... His speed will run him into thunder storms through Fisherfield tomorrow! Bob, Tom Bruce has the fastest time on the Ledmore traverse ...

Re: HT550 - 2024

2017 Neil Beltchenko - 3d10h22 an 8% improvement I think that was the first year where the leaders didn't stop on the first night. I remember Chris Hope hinting before hand that he was going to ride for 36 hours, as he'd done it on numerous adventure races. In 2015 the chat was about getting far en...

Re: HT550 - 2024

There's a bit of difference between an event that's had a century of attempts by lots of athletes and one that's only been going for ten years and attempted by a handful of riders at the pointy end. The marathon record has only progressed by "seconds" in the last ten years or so https://en...

Re: HT550 - 2024

Apart from the bit around Ben Alder, the outward part of the route is easy riding. There's the peat hags getting to the climb up to Bealach Horn but they are frustrating rather than hard and are downhill. At his current pace it will be around twelve hours at a guess before he gets to the hard stuff ...

Chuffin' hell!

24 1/2hrs in and he's at Lone, in about 15mins he'll have finished the outward GPX file and start on the homeward one

For reference, he's now at the point where Ian Fitz bivvied for his second night in 2016 when Ian finished in 4d 2hr.

Re: HT550 - 2024

Pretty much my thoughts Sean. I think we've similar finishing times and from memory I think I got to Contin around 11am on the second day so yeah, he's 12hrs up on my/our time. Depending on how strong he is (I suspect very) there's only the steep climb just ahead that *might* cause a bit of bike pus...

Not sure if the leaders are quick as other years or not - the current leader is at Culra bothy as I type, then there's a large group on the section between Benalder Cottage and the Bealach Dubh.

Re: Brakes; mechanical or hydraulic?

I've BB7s on the fat bike, TRP Spyres on the Genesis CdF and Hopes on the Solaris and Spearfish. Out of the three I'd say the Spyres are least inspyring (sorry). Even though I've got good quality outers they seem to go soft really quickly. They take the "standard" Shimano brake pads so you...

Re: HT550 - 2024

Looks like the only differences from last year's route are: back to the northern shore of Loch Lyon the diversion to avoid the collapsed/risky bridge before Loch Rannoch - a bit of a frustrating loop after that as you are on the road, back up into the hills to rejoin the original route only to drop ...

Re: Trangia kit - too bulky for bikepacking?

The actual burner in a Trangia is just a meths burner that you can extinguish using the cap. The pan and windshield are the things that take up all the room but they aren't necessary for the burner to work.

Welcome to the quiet, slow side

Not sure when it is coming/has come into effect but there's parking restrictions in the Wheelbase/Wilf's yard. They were due to be in place for the winter JennRide but weren't - Rich might know better.

Thanks, and good point about pegging to the ground, I will try raising the edges Even strongly driven rain is rarely at more than 45deg so if the edge of the tarp is 100mm off the ground then the rain will "get in" by about 100mm. Obviously that's only on one side. If you are camping in w...
