Re: Soft Shell trousers
I'm using Endura MT500 3/4's and Defeet Woolie Boolies inside Shimmy MT81's. Gaiters over the top of the boots to keep the elements out. Plus a pair of Orca merino leg warmers for when you want just a little more warmth on the lower part of the leg. Sometimes I'll use my summer shoes instead of the ...

To all you crazy snow riders...have a great race. Race hard, stay warm, don't lose any digits! I'm rather envious...you'll get to enjoy fresh salmiakki.

Re: Non scientific battery test
When @ home, I use Duracell rechargeable in the Etrex20. I might get 10-12hrs runtime in the Garmin like this. When out in the field for anything longer than 3 days, I'll use Energizer Lithiums (and carry a spare set). I get good lifespan from 'em with the Garmin set to 5 second backlight (approx. 6...

Re: Naming bikes
Yup...me 'n Mrs Scattamah name all our bikes. But then again, we're probably considered odd, too. Currently with me on this side of the pond are Kadey (my Cadex - obvious where that came from) and Lois (my Superfly). Lois came about from my mechanic saying it needed a name...he suggested Clark (deri...

Re: Crankset Epic!
Interesting about the "worse" pedal stroke. I was on a road bike and for the majority, it was flat road riding. When spinning at 80rpm or higher the power probably wasn't even, but then again, you're just turning it over at that speed. I noticed it more when I was 65rpm or lower - I'd get ...

Re: Crankset Epic!
Many, many moons ago, I used Shimano Biopace rings. Rather than having even pressure all the way around the ring, the was a slack spot that allowed for faster movement through the stroke. When I got to the sweep through the bottom or top of the stroke, I had added foot-speed to push through these ar...

+1 on the Neoair XLite. Relatively light, very comfortable, packs small. > 3K miles on mine and no punctures yet. The only thing I've noticed is the mylar inside seems to have come apart on one row.

A short 25 click hop over Bayston and Lyth Hills and back home this afternoon...found some play in my bottom bracket that needs addressing. 5 days off the bike has let my hammy heal some...felt much stronger today.

Re: Too much storage space?
I'm in the "got one of each" camp...so there's no internal arguments on which one to take. I either pack it or I don't. When I don't, I often find I should've packed the offending item/s left behind. Seems it's something that just comes with practice.

Leaves the triangle open for 2 bottles and easy carrying on the shoulder. Batpack6 for additional easy-access storage. Only th...

Re: Best Rotor Size - Deore M615 Brakes
Shimano do pads with cooling fins on them (F type) - they take longer to get to the point where you start getting fade. If you're worried about stopping power on long descents, it's a relatively cheap way to step up a notch.

Re: Stabilising the Alpkit Fuel Pod (or other top tube bag)
I use the Revelate fuel tank which is rock solid...the strap that goes around the top tube has dimpled rubber on the inside for friction/help keep it in place. Perhaps experiment with some old inner tube affixed to the inside of the TT strap to get the same effect.

I don't have a problem deciphering it...nor the half million local dialects on this little island. Black Country slang threw me for a loop early on, but it's not so bad now. :)

Lots of places come to mind...for cycling and lifestyle - Arizona, Colorado, Montana, British Columbia, Victorian high country or Nth NSW. If language was also no barrier, the foothills of the Andes, Himalayas or Atlas mountains would be nice. Then again, the geek in me says Tokyo, the musician in m...

Currently holed up in Shrewsbury, W. Salop. Close enough to town to walk it.
An hour 'n a bit ride to Long Mynd or Stiperstones. A 45 minute train ride and a 40 minute ride to BearBones country.
It's ok here, but I do miss the Australian sunshine and beaches.

20 miles last night to visit folks...stayed overnight...23 'n a bit miles back...explored a little section of the old railway route that runs along Wenlock Edge. Ugly headwind on the return leg. I think it might be beer o'clock after that little affair.

I've just had my bike flown out from the US...Mrs Scattamah did a good job of the packaging. Subzero bivvy on top of Long Mynd last night with Composite...still a bit of snow and a lot of ice up on the southern end. Not sure what the temp. dropped to in the end, but it was pretty close to as low as I dare go with my ultra-waif bag. First non-bothy run of the year down. 11 to go :) Greetz S.
