Re: Brakes; mechanical or hydraulic?
No, the Hopes are full hydro. They do two versions for SRAM/Shimano to cater for the different fluids. Hope used to do a brake where the master cylinders mounted under the stem and the cables from the levers operated them, so you could use your existing brifters and add hydro discs. Discontinued no...

Re: HT550 - 2024
No compulsory kit as far as I know, never has been on any of the races I've done.
It's not just about the temptation to sleep, with less weight you are faster so finish before you need to sleep?

Re: HT550 - 2024
Alex (the leader) has now covered 250 miles in under 24 hours :o He's now over a day ahead of where I was after 1 day! Looking at the pictures on Alan G's Instagram at how much luggage he's got (I have more on my bike on the Monday commute with my office clothes) I'm going to predict he's not going ...

Re: HT550 - 2024
Slight miss-reading of the table there? The 7.5 hrs was to CP1, took 11 hours to get to 116 miles, but that's still flying :o The leader has just gone past where I was after 24* hrs and he's only been riding for 12 :o I had stopped overnight but even if I didn't I'd still have been nowhere near ther...

It's so legendary I remember it as if I was there. One day hundreds of people that weren't will claim to have been there, like the Sex Pistols first gig

Re: HT550 - 2024
I see Alan G is out already, bitten by a dog 2 weeks back. This will be the first one he'll not ride  I'd never actually seen his name on the list so I think he was never intending to ride? On his Insta is says Birthday cake yesterday. This year, for the first time ever, I won't be riding due ...

One Night Out
May 24 BAM I thought instead of my usual list of facts and ‘technical author’ style I’d try and write this one up in a more literary style, inspired by the book I’m currently reading, The Rider by Tim Krabbe, which is a first person account of a race interjected with recollections from previous race...

Re: Rigs of the 2024....TOR Divide
I would add I hate water in plastic bottles as much as anyone, maybe more. I once had an long argument in a cafe at the inshore lifeboat when they refused to fill my bottle and said they sold bottles of water instead. As the queue behind me grew I pointed out that I wasn't going to pay £2 for half a...

Re: Rigs of the 2024....TOR Divide
 Thanks Dave. Talking of... when you see reports on the news about water supply problems and bottled water being handed out by the pallet load, it makes worrying about a couple of plastic bottles on a bike ride look a bit silly. Bonkers that a water company with access to tankers and bowsers a...

Re: Yay, it's cheery Friday.
Fair point Sean, we are lucky in that respect. Hence why I don't use bottled water etc. Pity the effluent side of things isn't quite as rigourous. Then again we're pretty lucky with that too compared to many countries aren't we. I think it's the accountabilty that I'm a bit cynical about sometimes ...

Re: Zip Theory
I know you said you don't want to lubricate.... I use a silicon and PTFE maintenance spray on mine, I'm not aware it attracts dust (not much sand where I am) and it leaves the surface non-stick because of the PTFE. I have to use this on brand new waterproof zips to get them to operate. It makes a hu...

Re: Spot Tracker Anyone Please?
I've got a Gen 3 you could borrow but it's not currently registered etc. Looking on the SPOT website it would cost around €80 for one month on the flex plan which looks the cheapest way to do it.

Re: Hammock tarp ridgeline
I made mine mainly as an excuse to have a go at splicing.
I didn't think I'd like the split ridgeline as I used to hang stuff from the ridgeline under the tarp but I've not really missed it.
As for the price of Dutchware kit, I've recently bought a chameleon and an asymmetrical bug net for it, ouch!

Re: Hammock tarp ridgeline
I replaced my ridgeline and guys with zing-it which is half the weigh of the 2mm marlow line I was using. I saved 16g and it only cost me £40  The marlow was £7 for a 50m reel. I've got a split ridgeline with Dutchware fleas which works really well. I was worried it might be tricky to centre ov...

I've made one that's virtually identical and it's not a problem. The lip is against your back so the mud doesn't get to that part.

Interesting, I wonder how durable they'll be? I use the xc trail versions of the Vittoria tyres as I've heard the xc race have sidewalls vulnerable to punctures? Not such an issue in an xc race but not so handy miles from anywhere.
