Re: 2017 plans
Firstly for 2017 I need to be more committed, I often read about things and think "I'd like to do that" but then don't do anything about it, so time to stop dreaming and start riding! With that in mind putting my list down means I'll have to do them. Braunton 150 - already on the group sta...

Re: Single Speed Conversion
Cheers All, I'm really pleased with how it came out. Good effort, not sure if I would go quite that far on a hack frame! Oi! That's my pride and joy  The low cost of the original frame as an ebay bargain (it was new but has a paint defect on the seat tube, I put a sticker over that as well :lo...

Re: Revo Full Power Speed
Thanks for the replies, I must be just on the cusp of getting full power at the speed I was going. I'll pedal faster on the way home. I also have a RedEye and I'm very impressed with how bright that is and how little power it seems to require. When I put the bike in the shed last night I'd ridden it...

Single Speed Conversion
Thought some of you might be interested in the conversion of my geared frame to singlespeed. I'm usually a singlespeeder but when I bought the Genesis frame I'd been riding a geared bike for a few months and thought that it would be ok to not have an ebb or sliding dropouts. It didn't take long to r...

Revo Full Power Speed
At what speed does the Exposure Revo reach full power with all 4 LED's lit up? I've never been as impressed with mine as I thought I would be reading the reviews before I bought it. I used it briefly at the beginning of the year but for various reasons that bike didn't get used all year. It's now ba...

Re: Magnetic dynamo connectors
They look useful, and not just for dynamo wires but I can think of other non-bike uses. I had an similar idea about connectors for dynamo lights inspired by the magnetic power connector on my macbook. It occurred to me that with a magnetic connector for the power lead it would be possible to make a ...

Re: Accurate Elevation Data
Nope uses SRTM data. The 1:50k and 1:25k contours are not available as open or closed data. Only the Terrain 50 product is. Never knew that, but it is one if those things you take for granted as just working until you dig a bit deeper to find out how it actually works. I use MapInfo at work and Sou...

Re: Accurate Elevation Data
I use purchased Ordnance Survey mapping in Tracklogs and this seems to give results that match for the claimed distances/heights when I import a GPX of a route. I assume it must use the Ordnance's height data from the contours? I can try your GPX in on my mapping and let you know the distance and he...

Re: Quick question
Just beaten to it, I was going to say the same. My wife's flat bar road bike has a 10 speed 105 rear mech and shimano flat bar road shifters. I found out that to be able to fit a 32 or 36 cassette on the back to make the hills easier the way to do it is to use a 9 speed shimano mtb rear mech which h...

I get my thread from profabrics, Gutermann Tera 60, this stuff http://www.profabrics.co.uk/collections/thread-outdoor-camping/products/strong-polyester-thread?variant=6809862595 Some of my home made kit is over 2 years old, it's been soaked, frozen and occasionally in the sun and no failures of the ...

Re: First overnighter - your stories
I've been backpacking since the 80's in the scouts and with friends and started again more recently with the girlfriend (now wife) but although we were bivi curious we never quite took the plunge. We already had bivi bags and a tarp in anticipation but the thing that spurred us on was an Alpkit comp...

Re: waterproof jacket suggestions?
I've had a Montane Atomic for a few years and it's always kept me dry. I've worn it walking, running and on the bike. Mine is an Atomic DT but looks very similar to the current version. The current version is this https://www.montane.co.uk/mens-c1/clothing-c25/waterproof-jackets-c11/atomic-jacket-p9...

Re: Tour Divide 2016
We had the same problem. Below is my late father who had trouble with weeds getting caught in the prop of his self built pedal powered boat. We weren't trying to beat a speed record, but the Isle of Wight cycling festival used to have a pedal powered boat race across the river and back on launch day...

Re: bivi bug net?
Thanks for the pics, I can see how it's done now. I'd noticed the pull cord was on the outside, I've never noticed that they are there before but I've never paid too much attention to them on mine, I assume they are all the same. I've had mine for about 8 years (at a guess) and I bought it as a fact...

Re: Gravel specific shorts - really?
A great idea indeed and one which features on my 5 year old Wildcat Gear Tiger. Ahh, I didn't know that  But to be fair to me I do live on an Island off the south coast so I've only seen Tigers in pictures and the straps are already neatly stowed away.. which I now know is using the little bi...

If you've got more than one pair of 'gravel' shorts and need to take spares on a ride now there is a specific GravelPak to carry them in  http://bikepackersmagazine.com/first-look-jpaks-gravelpak/ On a more serious note I really like the quick release buckles with the cam lok to lock them off...

Re: Low budget mini tarp
I have to own up that mine was inspired by this http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/tarps-and-bivy-bags/WE102.html but as my tarps have been getting smaller with each new one, started with a dd 3m x 3m, then home made at 2.4m x 1.5m and now home made at 1.5m x 1.2m (the one above) I probably would of ...
