Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

My first in the streak was March 2020. I wasn't doing BAM but had a new (to me) bike and it's now a tradition that the very first ride for a new bike is a bivi. I allow myself a 100m spin in the road outside my house to make sure it pedals but that's it. I realised that if I didn't get out that mont...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

Another local school-night bivi. In fact it was at the exact same location as last months, although this was deliberate as I had a new bit of kit to try and wanted all the other variables to be the same, so I'm claiming it was for scientific accuracy and not just because I couldn't be bothered to lo...

Re: WANTED - UNDERQUILT FOR HAMMOCK

Cheers guys. I'd been looking on eBay and FB marketplace and noticed they don't seem to come up for sale very often/at all.

Perhaps I'll have a look at synthetic. I've got an old synthetic sleeping bag that might be a good basis for a myog one as a trial.

WANTED - UNDERQUILT FOR HAMMOCK

I slept in my hammock at the weekend and unlike the previous occasion I didn't end up with motion sickness so maybe I've got used to it. Using a mat as the lower insulation is a faff and I feel like I'm missing out on some of the comfort a hammock should provide so looking for an underquilt. I'll be...

Re: What down tube bag…

If it's for tools I think a tool bottle on the underside of the downtube is better, if you can mount a cage there. I'd also use a strap just to make sure the bottle stays in place. I've got a downtube bag but I only use it in the summer or if it's dry on the trails. If it's muddy and you need to get...

Re: Decent lock for bikepacking

I use a little 6mm cable lock, I think I was given it by a friend, they use them at Centreparks maybe? I look at it this way, a proper bike thief can defeat any lock, but, they generally operate where there is more choice (railway stations, bike parking areas in big towns) and aren't waiting for som...

I know :???: How are we supposed to know that day we need to get up to see the sunrise? Next year I'll have to befriend a hippy in the run up to get the inside info. Yeah man, like get up and see the sun man, cool man, yeah like, what day? Oooh, don't know man, don't crush me with these rules about ...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

Back in December (at the winter bivi) we discussed a solstice bivi, but work commitments meant this was out of the question for me  I did plan to get out locally for the solstice, the actual solstice was Wednesday at 15:58 so I had planned to bivi on the Wednesday night as that's the closest to...

Re: Just how long ....

Ah, the routes are in Wales, so that 60 miles has 20,000 feet of climbing and only 5 miles is on a rideable surface

Is the book aimed at beginners? Those just starting out might have more kit (heavier bike) which will slow progress and they won't be used to riding a loaded bike.

Re: Just how long ....

It think it depends on how you want to approach it. Whilst I would quite happily ride a 60+ mile route in one as a day ride I've been on bikepacking trips that are shorter. For example the BB Gower ride was only 53 miles long, but with lots of people to talk to, stopping, cafes it didn't seem like w...

Re: Conveyor uplift?

I saw that and had to check the date in case it was an April fools? Given the likely complexity of the mechanism and the sensitivity to debris getting in (and the engineering success of previous uplift infrastructure in Scotland) isn't that just going to break down all the time? I assume there's onl...

Re: Today's Run

Usual post work Tuesday run, I knew it would be hard as the van said it was 28 degrees on the drive to the start. Took it steady and tried to keep in the shade. Having no particular plan and just making it up meant I ended up doing just over 10 miles with just under 1600 feet of climbing. I know I s...

I didn't know that drafting (on the bike) wasn't allowed in Ironman, never noticed they didn't when watching it on the telly. It is allowed in Olympic Triathlon. Just the thought off having to get up day after day and head out to do that makes me tired. Chapeau to him for being able to motivate hims...

Re: New Lakeland 200 Women's FKT

TBH I thought that Javi would be the next to get that double as he’s got into fell running now and is doing pretty well in races. He didn't mention any plans when I was out riding with him recently, but he's so laid back anyway and we were just enjoying* the riding. I have seen some of his runs ref...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

Chapeau, that's some ride  I've never managed to solve the hands/arse issues that come with rides over 24 hrs. I have a feeling that if you do anything with your body for 24 hrs+ it's going to hurt. I've read that some long distance runners (doing runs of 100 miles and up) talk about everythin...

They also touch on the Cutthroat, old men buy one and go to 'find themselves' on the TD* Sounds a bit snobby. I am getting old. Own a cutthroat. At this point, should Cutthroat be its own bike category for the TDR? Might be the only way they finally get a win, if it's in their own class? I think I'm right in saying that no one has ever won on a Cuthroat? Not kept up with it the last few years. Re: HT550 2023

That was using the Postman’s Path rather than going out to Poolewe so maybe a four hour difference. So the 'original' route was quite a chunk slower then, as the new route to Laggan must save a couple of hours and the new route through Torridon must be another 2 hours quicker? The route changes mos...

Re: HT550 2023

I was wondering what was going on with my thumb. I also had gravel rash up my right leg from a crash descending to Fort A on the first evening, endless cuts to my right calf from the pedal hitting it pushing, both shins torn apart by vegitaton on the Postman's Path and I'm sure quite a few more cuts...
